Default Ford's new 3L V6 Diesel "Lion" Engine

I think that Ford have hit it out of the park with the new Ranger & Everest in terms of design and specs. I am a big 6cyl diesel fan and that is the one I would go for. However, I have read that it is the "Lion" engine of Land Rover Discovery 3 & 4 fame ... the one with the crankshaft issues. Are any of you aware of changes that Ford made to the motor to prevent the same issue?

As far as i know they have redesigned the crank, bearings etc, it is used in the F150.

Thanks Predator, that's very good news. I see they have already discontinued the diesel option in the F150 (nothing to do with a crank issue as far as I am aware).

I still don't understand the engine choice, i was 110% sure VW would just ship batches and batches of their well loved and well proven 3.0TDi to the Ford factories to bolt into the top models, why the decision to switch to something with a known history of problems?

I understand the economics of letting Ford build the bakkie and in return letting VW build them both a little panel van, but why not take the best bits from both brands extensive lists of components to try make the next product better than all the competition? R&D on the VW motor has surely paid for itself 10 times over seeing as its been around in one form or another since like 2004 and they've had nearly 20 years to get the formula right...

The Yanks are not very fond of diesel vehicles, not like us. Maybe thats the reason.

Spiceman, not completely true. They love diesels with huge displacement. They love to say: No replacement for displacemnt.
So, the large power stroke diesels like the 7.2 lt V8 is their preference.

I can imagine that VW didn't want to concentrate on developing a new pick up with internal combustion engine, since sales of new ICE powered vehicles supposedly should stop by 2035.
I guess they are busy in the EV department.

That is the reason. VW is going 110% electric.i dont care what people say but the existing amarok is a great reliable bakkie. Im gone buy the last one just before the new one arrived.

Yes that is for sure and I understand. But I don't know why they had to develop 'n brand new Amarok.
There is not much wrong with with the current Amarok. I reckon a very extended face-lift with complete new body and interior design and updated electronics would have done the trick. They had to do it for the new one in any case.
Then fix some of few known issues, retune engines, add a couple of other things like low range, and then some other nice to have luxuries and off you go.
Yes maybe some people would not have been happy with that and they would have lost some sales. But a lot less than they are going to loose now.
And I really don't believe they will attract many new buyers.
