Default Amarok V6 DPF issues - what now?

Ok so i recently had DPF issues where on a trip my V6 went into limp mode because of DPF being clogged. Managed to limp to local dealer where a regen was performed and i was merrily sent on my way... no issue since, but strange that it occurred on a 3000km trip around the country over two weeks with speeds of 60 -130km/h and also a bit of off-road and dirt road but predominantly tar... Many have suggested:

    1. De-CAT
    2. DPF removal and delete
    3. EGR Removal
    4. Stage 1 Re-map
    5. Gearbox software upgrade.

Are these the only things i should consider? or not consider?

I am not against this, although i am in no real need of any more power besides a better fuel consumption... (11.6L/100km currently - lots of extras on vehicle and a heavy foot)

I do however have questions as to possible "side effects" each of these changes? The Vehicle is out of warranty with 75000km on the clock. Anyone have some insights as what i should look at doing, and as to possible negative implications with the changes. I have heard some horror stories, albeit because of chipping and not remapping, but don't want to do this blindly.

Have at it! and thanks for the assist.

    cheers

On 88000km now, have also had the light come on once, no limp mode though. I put it in manual and did my daily commute to the South, kept the gears low and revs high for 40km and it solved the problem. Prior to this my car stood for 3 days, it then rained non stop for over a week which made me drive very cautiously with extremely low revs. I would say they need a good burn often.

I'm not too familiar with this engine, I don't know if it has a cat and a dpf together, but I'd have both removed and have downpipes put in with cat foolers.

    You'll gain some responsiveness.

The alternative is that you need to do an "Italian tune up" every once in a while to get everything hot, to remove blockages. You'll probably have to drive the car very hard for a couple km every few months.

If its out of warranty and you are not a bunny hugger then its a no-brainer to decat do a DFP delete (you will need the car coded for this, so while you are it you can release quite a few more ponies but thats whole different debate)

On the upside it will make the car a bit more responsive but dont expect any real improvement on fuel economy.

Those that have done the above on the v6, is there alot more soot afterwards? I remember the modded 1,9TDI Polos and Ibiza Cupras making terrible soot after been tuned and fiddled with.

I did it to my Q7 V8 tdi (very similar engine to the V6), no difference to smoke before and after.

The Polo's you refer to usually have stupid crazy power outputs by simply dumping as much fuel and boost as they can into the engine, I knew someone who could make traffic behind him disappear both in smoke and distance with his Polo TDI - the car was a monster but had an appetite for turbos. Dont confuse those cars with a sensible tune on the V6.

    None whatsoever.

I have a 76mm freeflow and remap. My wife once drove behind me and I asked her to watch for smoke. Even at WOT there no smoking at all.

I does have a very conservative map though, don't know if this has anything to do with it.

    Maybe this will help you

    https://www.shop.liqui-moly.co.za/pr...ilter-cleaner/

You should be able to get this from Goldwagen.

There are a number of videos on YouTube that show the process, using similar liquid cleaning methods.

My local techy told me the best you can do for your diesel is a De Waal exhaust, adds years to your turbo life.

How long did it last before the engine go into regen again? Or do you have to use Liqui Molly permanently?

After another regen issue, in the end i did the EGR delete with de-cat and DPF removal as well as ZF box software update... I was skeptical, but i can honestly say the vehicle is a whole different animal. More that 1L/100km improvement (driving dependant) and the vehicle is much more responsive both on the auto box and engine performance. Didn't do stage one, but did up the KW to current V6 (pre-volksford ama-ranger) spec - 190kw. I have no idea why anyone would want more. Towed a 1 ton loaded trailer and 5 people to CPT and back with a consumption of 13.6L/100km. So all in all i am very happy with the vehicle and will definitely keep it to at least 300 000km. (just done 96000km)

If you vehicle is out of warranty, i would highly recommend the changes... I have a friend with the 2L and he is also pleased with the change on his.

Generally reputable tuners will be able to do a gearbox flash as well as the engine flash.

I used a company called ATM Automotive software in KZN. They arranged the software and physical removals. I didnít go with a replacement pipe. I asked that they just cut open the two boxes and remove CAT and DPF then close up. They also ensured there was a slight reduction in the pipe to ensure a little back pressure, but the pipe in general looks standard which is what I wanted.
