I agree that if we were just driving from location to location, we would be fine, but we also want to do drive around area of each campsite.

Anya, for your peace of mind just get 2 additional 20l jerry cans in order to have around 180-190l depending on your double tank (maybe 140 or 160l + 40l).
Don't know what vehicle you have but if it's an Hilux you have by far better fuel consumption than a Landcruiser. Plus don't know how much experience you have on sand driving. Your driving style can hugely affect the consumption.
For eg., never use low gear unless absolutely necessary.

We just did Maun to Kasana. Towing off road caravans.

Dad’s 3L D4D Hilux did almost 6km/l. So you should be more than fine with 160l of diesel in the 2.4 nit towing

    The Cruiser 76 v8 diesel did 5km/l

    My 200 v8 diesel did a flat 4km/l

This was for the 700odd km we did

To answer if “it is worth it to drive back to Kasane” to fill up after doing Ihaha. Yes it is also insurance in case no fuel is available at the shell.

What is your planned itinerary? How many days at each site?

hi, I apologize for the late reply. Going over all my posts and answers, writing down all the tips. Three weeks to our trip.

we will stay 1 night in Kasane, 2 nights in Ihaha, 1 in Savuti, 3 nights in Khwai, 2 nights in Xakanaxa, 2 nights in Third Bridge, 1 night in Maun.

we will have extended tank plus 2 jerry cans. We are planning to drive around to look for animals in each place, except for Savuti, since we will probably get there just in time to cook, eat and get in the tent.

Hi there, I never made it to Bot in 2022, it was too late to book campsites, but I went in 2023. Did a trip from Kasane-Ihaha-Savuti-Khwai-Xakanaxa-Third Bridge-Maun with lots of driving around. We had safari vehicle with RTT and extended tank plus 2-20L jerry cans. We used it all, I cant say we drove on fumes at the end, but it was probably pretty close.
And oh, we topped it off in Kasane while we were filling up jerry cans, and in Muchenje.

    Thank you everyone!

I'm also heading to Bots end of Aug this year and am very worried about fuel. I'm not one just to drive a bit and then sit at camp, much prefer to be out driving throughout the day. I'm going Maun to 3x3rd bridge, 3xMagotho, 3xSavuti, then heading up to Ihaha for 2 nights. I'm renting a vehicle from Bushlore which indicates a 150L tank, plus I am renting 2x20L jerry cans. I'm hoping that should be more than enough. I guess worse case if if I get too worried, can always do a morning drive, come back to camp for a few hours, then head back out for a few and keep driving down to a min. It's so hard to judge how much fuel one needs especially when one has no experience driving Bots. Namibia was easy to judge and I was never worried.

Good thing there's a lot of well seasoned drivers here.

The question would be which vehicle are you renting? If a diesel hilux it shouldn’t be an issue with 190l on board.

I will be 2xsouth gate, 2x3rd bridge, 3x Magotho, 3x Savuti next June with 2.8 toyota hilux with a 160l double tank + 2 20l jerry cans. I'm also often off for game drive but still stay pretty close to the camps since I take it very easy.
I'm not worried, did with the same vehicle with no jerry cans Nossob to Matopi (x1), Mabuasehube (x4) and drove around Lesholoago and Mapya in the morning and around Mabua in the evening. Then another 2 nights at Bosobogolo (staying around the pan) and back again to Nossob.
When I arrived at the Nossob camp had still 1/2 tank on the gauge, meaning that the fuel consumption was 120l (did pretty good), so again, I'm not worried.
You have to understand that the fuel consumption depends very much from your driving (wether or not you use low gear range), tyre pressure management, and weight you carry (your car gets lighter the more fuel, firewood and water you consume, thus you improve the fuel consumption).
As for low range gears, use them in case of extreme need, which could actually be virtually never.

It's the Toyota Hilux 2.4 GD-6 DC 4x4 Auto Camp 4 Pax, although there's just the two of us in separate tents. I didn't even know they have petrol vehicles. I just assumed it would all be diesel.
