    Default Magnetic North Pole

So this subject came up on my feed this week. - Only clicked on it because it came from one of my "trusted" space sites

Apparently the Magnetic poles are going walkabout at a serious rate in the last 20 years or so

The magnetic north has nearly gone from the Canadian Arctic to the top end of Russia

The south is somewhere in the ocean off of South America

I remember when Maps and compasses were still in use that the map had a date and you would add x number of minutes per year to align between the compass and the map

Well it seems to mean that the world will flip at some point - used to be an event many thousands of years in the future, now it seems that it could be this century

Seems like a wacko concept and my BS meter is still tingling but google via Wiki will lead you to a fair number of semi trusted publications

Put it under Astronomy as I think it belongs here - and we wouldn't want the north pole to be seen as emigrating to Russia

Lots of term's used that even after reading are still very fuzzy and obviously it will lead you to some really crazy sites

But a good read from the Russia thing happening at the moment

So the below shows how it is moving:

Here's a nice article from (albeit 2019) about the matter.

    Just to be absolutely clear:
The planet doesn't "flip" when the poles reverse. It is only the magnetic field that reverses. The only real problem is that the magnetic field is likely to weaken considerably before it reverses. This will mean less protection against radiation.

That's something I was / am battling to understand as to why the planet would flip

But all the info I could find had that as a certainty

Somehow the Carrington solar storm from 1870 gets referenced in the theory

From that event apparently the telegraph wires in the usa worked without battery power for many hours

In astronomy we dont use Magnetic north , as its way off and moves around as mentioned , the earth axis will not change so dont worry the seasons will not change , however if the core dies (all solid) we will loose it and with that our atmosphere (like Mars) but not for many many years
hopefully humans have learned how to do space travel properly by then , but this will be millions of years , I am glad things take a long time
I have a very good friend he is extremely religious , very clever chap , but due to his belief intelligent life is only on Earth , so after the Million years there will be none intelligent life in the Universe ?

No need, they will fall off the edge before they even know what happened to them.

I thought that the earth axis did move. Not magnetic North, the actual axis.

No the tilt is determined by Gravity forces Sun , Planets and our moon , the magnetic force around Earth it to protect it , Mars has lost it but still revolves at same angle , but the more one looks at things its quite amazing Earth that is everything just right for us to live , just a bit closer to Sun no , Sun a bit bigger no , Sun a bit smaller no , no Jupiter planet no, no Moon no, ETC
Lots of scenarios but there are so many planets that the probability is 100% , in my small opinion

Interesting debate. As a Christian I believe in what the Bible says. It says God created everything, including the earth and all life on it. It does NOT say God created the earth only. So from a religious point of view I have no reason to discard the possibility of other intelligent life out there.

But lets not derail the OP.

We may find compass's now becoming very affordable.

The axis does not move, but there is a slight wobble.
