My 2004 Disco 2 Td5 auto with our Xplorer ready for blast off. I normally restrict my towing speed to 100 km/h but can easily tow at 120 km/h. Other than safety concerns the lower towing speed extends my range by a lot. I have fitted a rear view camera into the back of the caravan that displays on a 9 inch I've fitted to the dashboard. This gives a good view of traffic behind long before they appear in the mirrors. Click image for larger version.

Excellent towing with 2.8gd6 auto. Try to keep speed to a max of 100km/h for safety reasons and not using ECO mode. Fuel consumption with towing about 11l to 11.5l per 100km. Click image for larger version.

    Before: 2008 3.0 D4D Fortuner MT 4x4 with 1700kg loaded Baobab (illegal combination) - 6.7km / l @ 100kph - Profender Suspension great but in-coil airbags actually useless.

Current: 2021 2.8 GD6 Hilux Raider AT 4x4 with 1700kg Baobab (now legal) - 6.7km / l @ 100kph -Tough Dog suspension great plus proper air bags that work really well when towing.

Had an XT 120 initially. Towed just fine. Age and the necessary "bathroom visits" up and down the ladder convinced me to move to a caravan. With a bad Explorer experience before the XT, we opted for a lightweight all fibreglass offroader. It is a bit heavier than the XT yes. I have found though with more packing space you tend to take more stuff and it all adds up. With both I get around 8 to 9 km/L it is a 3.2 DID CR. Flat sections (OFS etc) are a breeze at 9 km/L. As soon as it gets hilly I am lucky to get 8 km / L. I went from 265/70/17 back to std / specified 265/65/17 when I got the caravan and immediately saw an improvement (why I say now about the same with the heavier van) in towing performance / economy. They might look nicer but the 70 profile was a killer for the auto box.

My off road bus. VW Transporter 4motion 2.0tdi DSG auto. Consumption with slightly bigger All Terrain tyres and stuff on the roofrack is about 7km/l but can easily drop to 6 depending on wind.

    It actually tows pretty decent.

The last few years of towing, a few combinations.

Go to tow vehicle lately is the 2.8 Hilux, the latter one with canopy. Ave consumption towing the hefty Ratel was 8.4Km/L.

The 200 Cruiser in 4.6L petrol V8 was disappointing - really heavy on juice and hunting gears all the time. Ok 1 size bigger profile tyres didn't help. Although otherwise a brilliant vehicle, the best I have owned so far.

The FJ - Although the 5th gear is really only an overdrive, it towed the Ratel without much fuss, as well as the previous FJ towed a Companion without issue. Fuel consumption was around the 5.8Km/L mark.

I'll have to dig out some pics of the best tow vehicle I have owned, the tuned and mighty 79 V8 Cruiser DC. This towed an Explorer without breaking a sweat. Shame poor Explorer, I normally had to apply cream on the stretch marks on the A-frame

I am not one who tows at 100 - 110, I keep to the speed limit, unless unsafe to do so.

An old Disco Td5 and an even older Wilk Topaz. My holiday begins when I pull away from home, so I'm that old toppie with a caravan behind him that sits at between 80 and 100kmh. Tow mostly in 4th, get on average 8km/l and overtaking is wishful thinking.

This Patriot with a CVT gearbox couldn't even pull a brick. Gearbox overheated pulling this 5ft trailer @650kgs. Around 11.3L/100. Never really enjoyed that vehicle.

Then, the little 1.4i Corsatjie towed well but very slow. The mountains to Swadini were a torture but we made it. Normally 7L/100, towing 9.5. Loved that little thing.

Switched from FJ to Fortuner because I couldn’t get used to the incessant hunting of gears on the FJ even when locked in 4th gear. And the fuel consumption on the FJ was terrible, especially when towing. I used to average around 5.25 km/l.

The Fortuner - 2.8 AT 4x4 - on the other hand is a towing machine. Cruise control locked in 5th gear uphill and down no issues. Consumption wise, I get around 7.5 km/l. Much better storage space too.

I miss my FJ though. If I didn’t tow, goodbye Fortuner, hello FJ

    Our towing combo...

Hilux and the Maxi is a really comfortable combination on and off road.
Fuel consumption on average (highway driving) is around the 8.5 to 9.5km/l mark, depending on prevailing conditions.
