    Thank you all.

    Thread closed I think.

    No point in pondering further.

Obviously I am not alone or the first.

Just needed to get my emotions off my chest so that I can forge forward.

I suspect my wife may be taking more strain than me, dealing with me, my mom and the situation. Dankie Liefie.

    Dankie almal..

On the bright side, tomorrow EL, the next day Georg, the next day Slaap Stad.

Tough times indeed Keith, my best wishes for you and your mom. My mom lived with me until the age of 95, thereafter on the doctor's advice we put her in the local Frail Care Centre. She was quite happy there as she used to attend their Church services twice a week. Exactly three weeks after her 97th birthday, she passed peacefully away, very quickly according to the nurses. She had a good innings.

You are in my thoughts Keith, this is a hard decision and a difficult road ahead. Cherish the journey and phone her every day, regardless of how much you are frustrated by incidents keep your composure. That single crisp and time spent with her is worth a million bucks with her answer "Keithey, that's nice." that is true mothers love.

You have a long journey ahead, make the most of it and make it an interesting one for her and a memorable one for you.

Been there and done that, my folks were in palm beach just down the road from you. Visited as often as I could and saw them slowing down untill that call came....
Would give what for one more phone call but that phone is not answered anymore there is no reply only amechanical voice saying "the number you have dailed....

Sad day(s) Keith. Call or message if you need anything, even if its just to have a beer with someone.

Remember, its not about the few boxes of goods you have loaded in the van that symbolises a life lived, they dont. Our ethos is leave only footprints. Well thats what counts. Our loved ones, ultimately, leave their footprints across our hearts.

Keith, I made the same dreaded trip in reverse (from Cape Town to Howick) with my 90 year old father 3 years ago. We also took it slowly and did the trip in stages.

It turned into one of the most memorable (in all senses of the word) things we ever shared. Yes, it took a toll upon his (also frail) body and yes, he was slightly disorientated for a couple of days afterwards. But even though his eyesight was bad and he had to "see" through my descriptions of where we were traveling at that stage, the memories of visiting or passing through those same places on past trips reinvigorated and animated him. He told me of how him and his new wife battled up the Swartberg Pass in an Austin Flying Standard on their way to their honeymoon in Umhlanga in 1953. Of how a 2 year old me got carsick and burped my milk all over my 7 year old sister's lap during a trip to visit his sister in Fouriesburg - and my mom had to climb rearwards over the back of the Consul's front seat to stop my sister from chucking me out the window. Both stories I had never heard before. And there were many more.

That trip became one of my most cherished memories. I pray it will be the same for you.

    Strongs to you both.

My best wishes to you and yours, Keith

It is a very sad time, you are lucky to have had her for so long.

I became an orphan at an early age, both my parents died in their 60s, when I was in my late 30s and mid 40s respectively.

We have both lost both our parents many years back.
So already been there and done that.
I am not going to go into details, but this situation is always hard to deal with.

AND it may not be too long before we (ourselves) are in the departure lounge.
