Default Software/hardware recommendations for southern africa route plan and driving

Hi all. I am in the very beginning stages of planning a one month trip from PE/EL to zambia, via Bots, around western side of Zim (avoiding Zim). - for August this year.
I have the android T4A app in my android headset in the vehicle, but must say that I have no experience in planning routes on this, and no knowledge of how to do this. I am prepared to spend money to get whatever is needed to allow me to browse maps, and plan the route, and perhaps also have a backup nav screen in the car once we are driving.
I would much appreciate experienced travellers advice here. If you could 'start again' with contemporary Southern Africa route planning, what hardware and what software would you use, and would you continue with the T4A software on the car nav unit.

    Thanks in advance

Garmin base camp, with garmin downloadable maps from T4A. Add an inReach - either 66i or Montana 700, which will give you backup satellite messaging, and are routable using the T4A maps.

Its two different software packages. The downloadable maps are updated quarterly.

Base camp is not intuitive - but once you play around with it for a while, it works.
