    Default Most spacious 7 seater

    Hi All,

Hopefully somebody here has done this research before me.

We are a family of six and therefore need lots of space. I have found that most 3rd row of seating is designed for occasional use. What 4x4 7seater in your opinion has the most legspace in the backrow?

I currently drive a Patrol and my wife a Kombi as a schoolrunner. A 4motion Kombi is obviously an option but I'm not sure if I am comfortable towing a offroad caravan to Bots with it.

l am looking for a longterm solution.

    Any thoughts? Many thanks.

The D4 is extremely comfortable back there. They are real seats.

You drive a Patrol so you will know that there isn't much space for legs to do down back there. It's the same in the LC200 and Prado.

I'm in the same boat, family of 6 needing proper 4x4.

Previous Defender is an option, the later models that have the two forward facing seats instead of the troop seats. You have to live with the lack of creature comforts though.

New Defender they went to smaller jump seats at the back. Disapointing. Think its the same with the Disco 5.

Disco 4 has two individual seats at the back. I found them a bit narrow, and then there's the Land Rover stigma you will have to live with. But probably the best option for taller people.

I haven't checked the Pajero, but assume it has the same issue as the Patrol, LC200, Prado.

Bakkie based SUVs is where I'm at. Everest and Fortuner I found to be the best. There is a footwell so your legs go down. In the Fortuner your feet can go under the middle row, giving more room to move. I'm sure it's the same in the Everest but haven't personally checked. The seats individually recline and are very wide so ample space for kids up to around 10 or so. You can also adjust the middle row to give more space to the back.

Check Pajero Sport and Mux as well.

4motion Caravelle is the ultimate for space if it is able to get you where you want to go. The only real option for 6 adults.

That's a 2012 with the right configuration. Those seats fold down and face forward and have three point seat belts.

As someone who owns two D4s - I can say with confidence the rear seats are the best in class. They are not just kid seats. Adults can sit there and be comfortable. Suggest looking for an HSE model, or other model with the optional rear climate control, if you will use it with 6-7 pax in summer. We also owned a Pajero with the 3rd row, and driven the fortuner a few times as well. Not remotely comparable. The D4 3rd row seats are elevated above the second row, they are plenty spacious. They are not “jump seats” like the fortuner or in fact those defender seats in the pic. Also important - they fold completely into the floor when not in use - so your 5 seater load capacity is not compromised.

from a towing perspective nearly impossible to beat. We tow a conqueror companion with ours - does well. The main mod I would consider is changing from the 19” rims to 18” - which broadens your tyre options greatly and allows you to air down more, which is helpful in soft sand.

I have found both my D4s to be quite reliable actually. They are complex vehicles - lots of systems such as air suspension - which are likely to make the average yearly running costs higher - but spend 10 hours driving on corrugated gravel roads in it (vice a fortuner for example) and you’ll find all your teeth are still in place in your mouth. It truly is one of the most comfortable long distance cars on the road and more capable off-road than most.

Nobody does big comfy 7 seat SUVs as well as GM though - just very hard to find in Africa. A v8 suburban - very very nice. Off topic though.

A kombi 4motion with lift kit will be hard to beat.Space, proper seating and decent engine. And with 6 or 7 passengers there is still packing space..Not the case with any other 7 seater.

I do agree with this. Had the same with Swambo`s Volla bus. Had once done a real bad section of corrugation with it. Were so bad that even the sliding doors unlatched themselves even on 1.4 bar.

Very nice vehicles but not my cup of tee for an offroad vehicle.

    How old are the kids?
if one is of driving age, get a jimny and put the two oldest in that.

Or, still get a jimny and put the wife and the loudest kid in that. Sorted.

If the emphasis is on space a combi is hard to beat. And there are plenty of members that are happy with their combi's.

If the emphasis is on 4x4 capability and everything else the D4 is fantastic. I have looked at a number of 7 seaters (Prado, Fortuner, Pajero, Pajero sport, Q7, Pathfinder, Patrol), and I looked properly testing various cars and sitting in the 3rd row (I am 1.8m and 115kg). The D4 is by far the best, I would not mind sitting in those seats for an extended period. The boot is however very limited once those seats are in use, so you would need a roof rack/roof box (when traveling light) or a trailer when traveling more heavily.

Since you are already used to buying copious amounts of fuel (Patrol owner), you should look at the V8 D4, much less to go wrong and more reliable, cheaper to buy but heavy on fuel.

Two questions for you, no sorry three:
    1. Did you actually read the OP?
    2. Do you actually own those Patrolls that you claim in your signature?
    3. Have you ever sat in that third row in a Patrol
    4. Are you a midget?

    OK that was four....

I forgot to add that to my list, very nice vehicle and I would buy one if I can find a nice one at a reasonable price (3.0 CRD), but the 3rd row seats are not on oar with the D4 unfortunately.

I guess it depends on the size/age of the kids?
