Default TD5 - No preventative maintenance goes unpunished!

I have been going through my "new to me" Disco 2 TD5 since buying it - new rear coils, shocks, discs and pads. Front pads. New filters, grease props etc etc. Cleaning sensors per forum advise (thanks again!).

Once I had gone through all the above (and got rid of the 3 amigos), I decided to look at some often negligent fluid changes - starting with coolant.

Trying to do things properly, I read RAVE, watched Youtube, checked the forum before tackling the job etc. Some mentioned removing bottom radiator hose (without giving a reason), or if present, drain plug on coolant rail....

On 1/4 turn of a 13mm ratchet wrench spanner (i.e. not a power bar or anything), drain plug mount broke clean off:

Any ideas/suggestions? So far I am thinking I remove the coolant rail (busy with that - quite a mission) and get it welded back or is that a bad idea? Obviously critical it does not leak.

I was told to remove the bottom hose because the drain plugs break. One thing though - you cannot get all the fluid out. I forget the coolant capacity off the top of my head (7,3 litres?), but upon refill with new coolant, it only took around 5 litres.

Thanks for all the advice everyone - sorted by Silverton Radiators, Germiston - R200 to repair (just blocked the hole entirely) and pressured test whilst I waited (I believe they silver soldered/brazed it).

I did measure the coolant I removed, from the drain plug it was 8 litres.

    Thanks again for everyone's input!

My next challenge is I noticed the thermostat is original (2001) once I cleaned it (very cool they stamp the manufacture date on it). I believe I should get an OEM Thermostat? Does this mean from the dealer only?

Verskoon my as ek in Engels beantwoord....

The Td5 injectors are very different to "normal" injectors because they use the camshaft to pressurise the main injection dose and they are pretty complex items as such.
The ECU has coding for the injectors that are calibrated at manufacture and given an Alphanumeric code that is printed on the top of the injector. This code needs to be programmed into the ECU to ensure optimum firing of the injectors, and thus best efficiency of the engine.

If you strip a head and refit the injectors, they MUST go back in the same cylinder to preserve the programming.

As with others, they need very clean fuel and particularly the tiny little strainer that goes under the fuel pressure regulator housing into the head, as it's your "last chance" filter.
    It looks like this...

but is a LOT smaller than depicted.

The injectors are no longer made, and very few people can repair them properly, so they are pricey, but they are fundamentally sound units if the system is correctly maintained.
    Cheers,
    John Kilfoil
