Default What to do with new old tyres?

    Hi,

I am picking up a new car next week, and will literally be driving from the dealer to my local tyre shop for a tyre I prefer.

I find tyres to be cumbersome and space consuming so don't want to keep them... Has anybody sold tyres in the open market or is it generally not worth it for the optimistic couple of grand one may achieve?

Or is it viable to give them a way to someone in need?

    Thanks

    David

Make a deal with the shop where you are buying the other tyres, to trade the "old" one's in. This is common practice with a lot of the tyre shops.

Might have been worth doing a deal with the dealership, go half on the new tyres with them and leave the other set with them?
If not, I wouldn’t bother keeping them, sell them super cheap (like 1000 bucks) for some beer money and a quick sale.

edit: geez I type slowly. Or you guys type really quickly!

Generally speaking, second hand tyres, if they are in good condition, with plenty of tread left, and if the DOT code on the sidewall indicates the the is less than 7 years (preferably less than 4 years), then yes, there are plenty of people looking for tyres if sold at reasonable price. Yes, plenty of people are in the market for good 2nd hand tires at reasonable prices. Actual demand will depend on the exact tire size, type and condition, I think they are worth trying to sell provided that you don't expect to sell them for something like 90% of original purchase price.

You can ask your tyre shop to trade in.
I see you are in Roodepoort. Speak to Will at TWT Westgate. He always helps us out.

You might get a bit more if you sell them privately or on the forum tough

Near new tyres as per the op will sell quickly 2hnd, there is a huge demand for good well priced 2hnd tyres.

If the op prices them at near half of current new they'll probably sell same day.

Just remember to start the price a little higher than half of new, 2 thirds of new is probably a good point because Sa buyers always need some discount..
