I must have been for a music lesson in the English half of my double medium maths class, as I've not heard of this before.

But I Googled, and you're right.

I'm changing my answer to 9. Reply With Quote

It is not the language. Those will give wrong result if the formula programmed is not the same as in the book or where ever. I check results/programs using MathCAD 15, MathCAD Prime or SMath Studio. (SMath Studio is a free of Russian origin and very good. Russians have always been good with maths.) I have never found one mathematical mistakes in any one of those programs. Do not ask the results of other programs or quite a few apps.

The big problem is when the math is written right but the formula has a mistake. This is the case in the new EN standard I am working with just now. Originally Posted by Fluffy Most programming languages will force you to get it right. Reply With Quote

What I find interesting is that so many people give the wrong answers to dead easy problems. Even so called pro's. And the internet is full of this lately.

I do believe the average intelligence has increased, but it seems the intelligence gap has also increased over the last decades. Reply With Quote

That expression is totally ambiguous and was either put together by some one who wants to create controversy or cant do math.

Send it back, tell them to it do it again while giving them a clip on the lug hole. Reply With Quote

This is totally ambiguous and was put together by some one who wants to create controversy.

x = 6 / 2( 1 + 2 )

x = 6/ 2 (3) one first works out what is within the brackets

x = 6/6 this is where the controversy comes in

x = 1

now work it out backwards where 1 is y

1 = 6/2( y + 2)

therefore 2(y + 2)= 6/ 1

therefore 2(y + 2) =6

therefore (y + 2) =6/2

therefore (y + 2) =3

therefore y=3-2

therefore y=1

if the original x = 9 then

9 = 6/2( y + 2)

therefore 6/9 = 2( y + 2)

therefore ,66666 = 2( y + 2)

therefore y + 2 = 2/.6666

therefore y + 2 = .3333333

therefore y = 2 - .333333

therefore y = 1.666666 and this is not true

it is then clear that the x in x = 6 / 2( 1 + 2 ) is, and can only be 1  Reply With Quote

My standaard antwoord in matriek was: "Ek het net met een ding gesukkel, die res het ek f#kk0l van geweet" Reply With Quote

Tested with Delphi/Pascal, C, PHP. All gets compiler errors when you enter it as 6/2(1+2). They want 6/2*(1+2) : And that is what it is. 3(3)=3X3=9.

Exactly.

There is no reason to argue about the intention. The equation is not ambiguous. Maths will give an output based on the input and the rules of mathematics. So as the equation stands the answer is 9.

Should the person who wrote the equation desire the output to be 1, he should change his input.

It is - you of all people will know a programming language has strict syntax laws. That syntax will force you to program it unambiguously.

The reason you have never found one mistake is because you have obeyed their laws.

BTW - you can and do get different answers from different compilers on the same machine, and between different machine types. Especially with floating point and Trigonometric functions. Reply With Quote

Right, so this is how I see it. (I have even tested the integrity of both equations in a standard x/y axis graph) Reply With Quote

Like traffic rules that needs to be followed (OK not in SA anymore) there are mathematical rules to be followed.

The mathematical rules are summerised by (what I was taught) the acronym BODMAS

So the correct answer will be:

6/2(1+2)
=6÷2*(1+2)
= 6÷2*(1+2)
=6÷2*3
= 3*3
= 9  Reply With Quote
