    Default Addis Ababa

Looks like Addis is in the sights of Tigray forces. Not to long ago Addis was supposed to be the next big boom city in Africa- Its the HQ of the African Union.

ADDIS ABABA, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Ethiopia declared a six-month state of emergency on Tuesday after forces from the northern region of Tigray said they were gaining territory and considering marching on the capital Addis Ababa.
The announcement came two days after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed urged citizens to take up arms to defend themselves against the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF)

Not good news. About a year ago I was approached by a headhunter for a very lucrative position in Ethiopia. Just as well it didn't pan out!

Sad indeed. During 2020, Ethiopian Airlines gained lots, and lots of ground on competitor airlines in Africa, by simply not cancelling flights ex SA & other countries and taking cargo in to Africa, they literally left competitors in their dust. That will now come to an abrupt halt.

Poor Ethiopia. I hope this passes soon.

Another example of tribalism and shortsightedness of the people running the show.

Is there anything that can be gained by civil unrest / war apart from a shift of fortunes for a very few.

Many times it is the ones that can least afford the loss who start wasting resources.

    Sad example indeed.

In this case is more a religious conflict spanning thousand years.

The Tigreans are the oldest christian faith in the world witch adopted Christianity in the year 300 when they were known as the Askum Kingdom.
The oldest portraits of Mary with Baby JC also adopt a more Tigrean look ( Ethiopian looking)

Later on, as with other north african countries, Islam encroached and tried to wipe them out.

This link provides an interesting chronology of there history

Some say the " ark of the covenant" is in a chapel at Askum in Tigray

From my taking, the religious content is more a secondary one channeled around the Judaism and Christianity in a way to demonstrate superiority against the other splinter group of similar origin.

In all that covenant story, Islam doesn't play a role it is simply about the interpretation of the origins of modern day's Christianity, which in itself is not completely waterproof and more a result of copy and paste of various influential cults of the past. But that is another debate entirely.

The current conflict is more along the tribal, ethnic divide, a divide which has been cemented over by the generations of emperors forcing their fist into power of submission, a bit similar to Yugoslavia under Tito but for a far longer period.

In effect their won't be any winner from this conflict and just another famine is in the cards, famines which we all know from the past.

Why do I suspect Egypt has a hand in the Ethiopian internal conflict. They can only gain if GERD fails, and negotiations have not come to any resolution of the perceived Nile water issue.

Look like things are deteriorating into Hutu / Tutsi ethnicity style issue - arresting people based on there ethnicity on there ID cards.

He declined to answer a question on the ethnicity of those detained, saying: "These are United Nations staff members, they're Ethiopians..., and we would like to see them released, whatever ethnicity is listed on their identity cards."
The state-appointed Ethiopian Human Rights Commission said on Sunday it had received many reports of arrests of Tigrayans in the capital, including elders and mothers with children.
