Default Trucks blocking major and minor routes

We're leaving on a short (time-wise) road on Thursday morning: Spending 1 night each in Nieu-Bethesda, Hopetown, Bloemfontein, Oviston and Uniondale before returning home.

I've heard over the news that the road between Middelburg and Colesberg is blocked and that it is expected to spread to the Free State.
Haven't heard anything about the N1
Apparently (according to my BIL that tried to travel from Hilton to Jo'burg this morning) the N3 as well as the smaller, alternative routes are also blocked and he had to return home.

Anyone got more info, or knowledge of where to find out?

I have not heard about any blockade in Howick - there is free flowing traffic on the N3 there.

They blockaded the N3 at Montrose this morning, and now all vehicles are being taken off at Escourt, as protestors are turning cars back at the Shell, before Winterton.

Being also a truck owner I always wonder about these first trucks that start the blocking.
    - Who owns the trucks?
    - Is the owner in on this illegal activity?
    - What does the owner do if his truck is used against his instruction?
    - Very few trucks have owner drivers and such a person will not get involved in this. He knows how difficult it is to make a living in transport

I feel sorry for some of these drivers, it is an organisation claiming to protect local jobs.
They have been stopping trucks to see if the drivers were foreign nationals or not.
Keys were removed from trucks to cause the blockages.

Another example of the spectacular failure of policing. When did it become okay for people to do this? They should all be arrested for kidknapping, or any other charge that will stick. #failedState.

The problem starts way before this.

Alledgedly many of the drivers are illegal foreigners, without local drivers license and work permit.

I have sympathy with people who want to defend their livelyhood.

    Catch 22 situation.

One side: A dire shortage in local experienced drivers. There are very good reasons why the local out-of-work drivers cannot get employment. I believe it is these 'others' that are creating the interference in the industry.
Other side: Employers then employ foreigners. The job must go on.

My thoughts on this is that this ia a xenophobic attitude by those who are unemployed or lazy.

Maybe every now and then a driver like this will slip through the cracks but realistically, would truck owners entrust their very expensive assets to illegals with no documentation? From an insurance point of view or even simply, basic logistics. How is an illegal supposed to cross multiple border posts with these trucks?

I would have no problem with that, but it remains a failure of policing. If your allegations are true, there would be plenty of reason to arrest and impound if we did not live in a failed state.

Imagine local farm labour being replaced by cheap, illegal foreigners?

Would you critisize the locals if they got upset?

I know I am simplifying the analogy, but I think there is more to this story.

I think this has largely happened. If the foreigners are illegal, there is an easy solution, that would involve enforcing existing laws.

As for the locals, they have continued to vote for those that oppress them, so they really only have themselves to blame.

Lots of local truck drivers work alongside the criminal syndicates that high jack trucks.
These same jobless truck drivers refuse to work weekends.
These truck drivers want to drive 8 till 5.No more.
Have 2 friends that own small trucking businesses. They both employ foreigners that are legal and have all their paperwork in order.

N12 at the R42 offramp near Delmas currently blocked by protesting truck drivers. Incidentally Delmas has/had a massive syndicate where drivers would steal loads and sell them in the town.

I believe the local cops were on the take as well. When a station commander from a nearby town started investigating he was killed in a botched hijacking. You know the ones where they riddle the car with bullets and leave it behind
