    Default Generator fuel consumption?

    Hi guys.
Can anyone give me an idea of how much fuel a 50 Kva genny will use per hour ?
Would a 100 Kva use twice the fuel ?
    Thanks in advance.

6 to 12L per hour would be a ballpark figure but it depends on various factors like load, engine make, engine size, altitude etc. a 100KVA wouldn't necessarily use twice the amount of fuel and you should be mindful not to install too large of a generator, they do not like light loads.

These figures seem to be spot on. The 100kVA should use a little bit less under the same load but when estimating one can use just below double for the 100kVA. About 5% less.

Our 40kva used around 30 litres per day.

Isn't consumption linked to the size of the engine powering the generator?

Just look at it from a car engine perspective.

If you don't tow a heavy load, consumption will be less compared to the same engine size towing a heavy load.

The more load you place on the generator, the harder it works to keep the devices on, hence more fuel is consumed.

Isn't this sorta the same as asking how much fuel a 2L engine would use?

I would assume make/model/age/technology all play a role in fuel consumption.

I think he was just requesting a ballpark figure

From experience, a 30 KVA 3 phase John Deere uses around 5l per hour running at between 70% and 80% load, if the phases are balanced correctly.
The same generator would easily use up to 3l per hour if only loaded 10% to 20%.

If I remember the most efficient spot to run a 3 phase generator is at 80%, otherwise the fuel consumption will go out of wack, so if you spec a generator for your house, that's the mark to aim at.

I have a friend who was part of the commissioning of 2 1.6 MVA monsters running in sync on a mine if I recall. They installed 60 kl underground diesel tanks for each of them. As part of the commissioning they tested them flat out, full load, I saw the video of the turbo's glowing.

Yes Iím looking for a ballpark figure. It will be used for irrigation pumps when Eskom is out.
The load will be fairly constant .

Unfortunately I was never good with sizing big generators, the 3 phases confuses me.
As said 80% is the mark to aim at, however on the other hand you always think to your self that you should maybe oversize a bit in case you add additional pumps or something in future, so it will always be a compromise somewhere.
If you want to oversize for possible future expansion, then I wouldn't go below 50% load, IMHO from around 50% they are fine and quite happy, as long as you don't run them at something like 20% for extended periods.

Yes, one can clearly see the consumption go up from light load to heavy load, the load makes the big difference in consumption, so balancing your load with the genset output is important.

Sizing a generator must be carefully considered. Running at 50% is not good, 80% load is about the best for a generator.

Not wanting to get into a big willy contest, but we looked at a condition monitoring system on an MTU engine that they were busy overhauling at a mine in Orkney. The motor apparently is the same one they used in their locomotives, and each piston was around 9.75ltrs. It was a V20! So just short of 200ltr motor. Truly a beast with a turbo either side that was the size of a Fiat Uno. It also ran a huge diesel reserve tank.

Funny thing is that the consumption sounds awful, but the diesel motors do get more efficient as they get bigger so in terms of Kw produced / Diesel consumed they are actually not too bad.

Our 30kVA uses approx. 20 litres per 2 1/2 hour loadshedding. About 30% load
