Default Alec Baldwin & prop gun

Always thought prop guns just fires blanks for the effect

    Now it seems not so...

Still fires a live primer, and often shrapnel to keep a small powder charge in the case to let the gun cycle. They should be fired with a blank-firing adapter that prevents this shrapnel from flying around though.

At close range blanks can still be super dangerous, but usually on set they have very strict protocol as to who can handle what and normally good planning around the scene and actor/camera/staff placement so the gun is never actually pointing at anyone, only filmed to appear that it is.

And also Jon-Erik Hexum, a quite handsome upcoming actor who also died way too young, although in this case it was unfortunately due to his own ignorance. I will not say stupidity or negligence, as it seems he just did not know that blank rounds are dangerous at close range.

A few years ago a friend of mine who do TV lighting was working on a movie. They got in R4 rifles for one of the scenes, apparently real rifles but were told not to worry. One of the prop guys then found a round in one of the supplied mags, just then and there the entire crew downed tools and walked off set. They said they'll only continue if things are done properly, if they get prop rifles, if the correct regulations are followed etc.

    What a terrible thing.

Looking at the amount of action scenes with guns, I'm sure their safety protocols for props are very good, but nonetheless, accidents will happen.

And can you imagine how much #### the prop master is going to be in. From my understanding it was the sound director that was killed and the main director wounded.... They weren't even in the movie. So why was the gun being pointed at them and why was it not made safe....

I think horse-play, drugs or alcohol may be involved.... or the worst case of bad luck in history.

It was the director of photography.

And my guess is the gun was pointed at the camera (for that dramatic shot) and when he pulled the trigger, the director of photography and director got killed and injured.

Surely it must have been a live round not just a blank?

Agreed, it must be absolutely terrible.

Hopefully we will get some insights into what went wrong in due course. I doubt a veteran like Alec Baldwin would have been horsing around, but it is all speculation for now...

How do live rounds even find their way into a set. I suppose I can think of some scenarios but none that make it past even cursory safety. And it's not a "prop gun" if it's even capable of firing live rounds.

Our cable spiking gun that pushes a metal chisel through a cable uses 38 special round blanks. Basically powder then a thick wad of cotton or plastic or paper plug with melted wax type plastic inside to seal it all up. So I can understand at close range all that packing taking out or injuring someone.
