Default Safe route from EC to KZN?

Hello Eastern Capeners! Which route would you recommend from the EC to KZN? I've heard those towns like Mpata have became quite unsafe to through. Apparently locals jumps in cars and smashes windows in their begging attempts. My son is planning to drive through there in December with two female friends in his kar. Thanks very much in advance!

Depends on start route ie from East London through Transkei to Kokstad N2. Roads through Transkei are fantastic except in town's. Keep all electronic goodies and handbags hidden . Try go through umtata early as possible due to traffic congestion. Don't stop on side of roads for a pee break, highly dangerous.

    Look for the truck route.
    It bypasses Umtata town centre.
    Follow a truck.
From P.E. side its the big shell centre just before town left side.
    Turn left.
Ill try and find an old post with the turnoffs.

Even though Google indicates the inland route (Queenstown/Matatiele) takes longer than the N2, we have always found it to be quicker than the N2, purely because of time taken to get through the big towns and getting stuck behind traffic on the N2...
The inland route is about 80km further.

Thanks so far everyone. Our specific concern is driving through the towns there. We've being told that cars gets harassed to the extent that it would not be advisable to dare that. Does anyone have accurate info?

Timing is everything on a Transkei traverse, from the second week in December until first week of Jan I would recommend the Ugie-Maclear detour. Over the Christmas holiday half of the Gauteng population migrate to this area and do their shopping in Mthatha and surrounding towns. I have spent two hours working my way trough a little town called Dutywa once with a camping trailer in tow. Best is to travel trough this area early morning, beware though, one thing more dangerous and unpredictable than a transkei taxi is a transkrei horse(of which there are thousands off). It is the safest to fall in behind one of the kamikaze busses as they have a total disregard for any risk encountered in these conditions, and it usually works, everyone/thing clears their path. During the rest of the year its a pleasure to travel through this beautiful country, with a couple of places well worth a visit.

So my son has been a student in Grahamstown for the past three years. He has driven himself up and down many times over the past years / months. Sometimes on his own, sometimes with another female student in the car.

They always take the main route through Umtata. Touch wood they have never had any problems / have anyone interfere with them.

They always stop at the Umtata Wimpy at the Engen Myezo 1 Stop and have always been looked after.

I just drill into their heads to keep the doors locked, always fill up regularly in safe spots and only drive during daytime. Keep valuables covered/hidden and out of sight at all times.

We have also done a number of trips to visit them and have also had no problems.

How recent do you want did it yesterday, did it last week. Do it every 6 weeks. From the farm "Mkulu Kei" near kei mouth to pumula near port shepstone - 6 hours 22 minutes..

My daughter does it all the time.

It's safer than driving through joberg.

i normally tow an open trailer and overloaded cruiser. cover and hide inside stuff with a black shade cloth, you cannot see what is inside and you can't get the stuff out - if the window is broken.

Get through umtata before 07:00 and you have a great trip. use baypass - But do not use bypass if dark, too out the way and you cannot see the speed humps in the dark.

i can send you a long detailed whatsapp message if you want. 0836350105

Safer than most towns in south africa.

roads are good, new road works no disruptions at all.

    This is very similar to....

    "You live in Africa?
Are you not afraid of the lions in the streets at night?"

I don't even think of all the scary stuff when I drive through Mthatha, and I do it quite often.
