Post 19 inch rims and tyres for gravel roads

    Hi everyone

I'm currently considering buying a 2013 Freelander 2 HSE with 19 inch rims and Continental CrossContact tyres (I'm assuming it's 235/55R19). A Freelander with 18 inch or smaller rims would've been my first choice.

I really don't know a lot about tyres. Can anyone comment on this type of rim/ tyre for gravel roads? I won't be doing any serious 4x4 driving, but there will be quite a bit of corrugated gravel roads, stream crossings, etc. I mostly drive on tar, with a few gravel roads in between (mostly Cederberg mountains for those who know it).

I'm a bit worried about not really being able to deflate these tyres on a gravel road, low side wall, etc.

Any comments? Changing the tyres isn't an option right now.

    Thanks!

If you're buying from a dealer, ask them to swop the wheels for those on a lesser model. 17" is fitted to the base model.

If you can't, when the time comes to replace the tyres, upsize to 255 instead of 235. The profile will still be 55, but the sidewalls will be 10mm taller.

My FL2 2013 SE came with 18" rims, but I managed to get hold of a used set of 17" rims on Gumtree.

Much better for potholes and bad roads, and also some leeway for tyre deflation.

19” are bad. Very few good tyre options, have no business on a car that will be off tar.
