    Default Echo vs conqueror

Hello. I use to have a echo 3 trailer which a stupidly sold and now regret it. Now I am in the market for a trailer again but cant decide between conqueror and echo. The echo was brilliant except for the horrible awning on the echo which rain water dammed up on. The models will be between the echo 3/4/5 an the conqueror supra, conquest and compact.

    Thanks

If those were your only two considerations Id vote for Conqerer. Im biased, love mine to bits.

If you dont do much off roading Id look wider. There is some serious new contenders in the market:

Yep, Echo 3's have a GVM of 750, so you may tow it with your B License.

Echo 4/5/6 are all 1500kg, so you are not allowed to tow them.

From what I have heard, the echo 3 is very close to the 750kg margin when the RTT is fitted and a fridge inside. So legally you are playing with fire if you just load it up with stuff without checking the packed weight. (Very few people have the facility to do this).

For this reason, I have booked my learner's license for next week to just do the admin to transfer from Code B to EB. That way, I can get a Echo 4(or equivalent from a different brand) with a GVM of 1500 and run-in brakes. You will have ample loading capacity in terms of weight and the run-in brakes just make towing that much more comfortable. Plus, you can tow caravans in the future if you do decide to go that route.

PS. There are guys advocating for going the full EC license route if you do decide to upgrade your license, so look into that. It is more expensive and a bit more difficult in terms of getting license and renting the appropriate vehicle for test-day. That way you can drive any size rig legally.

I have a conqueror comfort and have owned a Conqueror Companion, a few Jurgens Xplorers and some other camping trailers one of which I built.

I cant comment on Echo as I left their showroom disgusted with the attitude about 10 years ago and have never been back nor will i ever go back.

The Conqueror is a great concept but build quality and back up service is a problem. I bought this Companion second hand in May or June specifically for a trip in July where we were camping in one spot for a week. Unfortunately I trusted the people that supplied it to me and thought everything was working, but many electrical plugs were not working, the electrical system was in a terrible state and to be frank a fire hazard. So Conqueror to blame for the poor design and the supplier who assured me everything was working to blame for the rest - the batteries werent even secured in place and could bounce around. I have since redone everything with Tino and Eddie at G4 Accessories who did an amazing job and spent about R12k with conqueror fixing things and improving things like the rear steadies, taps in the front for a shower etc. I am still concerned if it will be water proof in the rain though.

Below is an example of the wiring before and after.

I do think there are other options on the market now but i dont know much about them. Ive bought my last trailer unless something amazing comes out.

I want to see any loaded trailer or caravan that is still under the GVM. The cops check discs and that is it. If they start weighing we are all in the knee deep big stink. I have loaded my vans and they are all over the GVM when travelling.

But the axle rating is still fine when you do that, right...?
