Default Coming to your neighborhood: Radiant portable mini nuclear reactors.

    Fascinating concept:

Radiant aims to replace diesel generators with small nuclear reactors

    That's what I thought.
So the reactor might be small and "transportable", but you still need a big old boiler, turbines, cooling towers and plenty plumbing.

They are working on a self contained modular system. The reactor is the boiler............

So basically drop in the reactor, connect to a close-circuit water/steam system, and connect to the grid.

Yup. From what I read the whole system will be about the size of a shipping container. It will probably be very loud, so doubt it will be used in residential areas.

There is a reason why the Ruskie nuke subs are called "Boomers" :-)

For sure - but that's several orders of magnitude different. Underwater you can hear a hammer drop drop from tens of kilometers away.

Anything that was noisy enough to be disturbing on land would be heard half way around the world underwater.

And on the boomers, in fact all large subs, its the hull that gives it away. Daphne in Electric mode, because of size is one of the quitest subs in the world.

When it comes to warfare size isn't everything, just like in the wild. You are more likely to be taken out by a scorpion (Gabriel) or snake, or malaria mosquito than a lion.
    Cheers

    Apparently very safe:

Radiant says its fuel "does not melt down, and withstands higher temperatures when compared to traditional nuclear fuels." Using helium as the coolant "greatly reduces corrosion, boiling and contamination risks," and the company says it's received provisional patents for ideas it's developed around refueling the reactors and efficiently transporting heat out of the reactor core.

The turbines that spin at high RPM in order to generate the power are quite noisy. At least if the video's on you tube are to be believed. Also have steam being compressed and rushing through pipes etc.

I don't see it being much quieter than a steam locomotive.
