Default Tent groundsheet - net or tarp?

I noticed there is a price difference between normal net groundsheets and tarps of the same size.

Can a tarp effectively be used as a groundsheet?

Logically my brain tells me “no” as the grass might die, but curious to hear other opinions

    Thanks

    Your logic is spot on.

Grassed campsites do not allow “tarp” or solid groundsheets.
So it may be permitted on paved stands, but you should check with the places that you intend going camping.

    Net is a lot lighter.
Tar can get VERY slippery when wet
Best of both: Net on top, green pvc below the net. Light and obviously waterproof

Depending on the circumstances, you can use the net, or both.

Get a proper NET. SWAMBO has an old real net. We have also used shade net. If you have double layer shade net it is a risk.

On sandy soil and as a general rule: have a good dirt trap carpet to get to caravan or tent. Not cheap but works well. We have those in multiple. Not slippery, no feel of sand... Wash them in a washing machine... We have them also in the house all over. No dogs. 100%. Last for years. We have not replaced one. Oldest are at leas 10 years but most probably substantially older.

Having camped with a few people I found net is far better due to sand goes through Vs tarp where unhappy vrou has to constantly sweep. It is also cooler to stand on Vs a hot tarp....then the slippery surface of a tarp comes to mind. Lastly, pegging down...nets don't show holes but a tarp will.

I use a solid groundsheet exactly the same footprint than my Tentco 3x3m dome and directly on the ground to keep the tent vloor clean underneath. I have found that with the tent floor directly on damp ground, it becomes muddy and it a schlep to clean while folding up the tent. The muddy solid groundsheet just gets folded up, dirt and all and put in the bag. Iis made of PVC and does not ged damaged while packed dirty. I clean it once I get back home.

Over this solid groundsheet I use a ground net which is larger than the tent's floor footprint.

The tent then comes on top.

My tent has a sewn in solid groundsheet and it is unavoidable to damage the grass in a grassy campsite, even if I use the tent without any groundsheet or net. Therefore to use a solid groundsheet under the tent floor, the same size than my tent's groundsheet, I feel that there is no more chance for damage, than using the tent alone.

I love to use my ground nets. It works a treat.

And if there are large ants under a tarp or solid cover they will eat through it . Happened to me and now only use shade netting
