Default Gearbox/Transfer Case whine after clutch replacement

    Hi

I recently had my clutch replaced on my Defender 110 2010 Puma with 135,000 km. Clutch was replaced as a precaution as it started to make that famous rattle noise and we going on a large trip to Namibia.

After getting the vehicle back it suddenly has a whine coming from either the gearbox or transfer case. The mechanic says it sounds like the gearbox and that the clutch replacement could not have caused the sudden noise. I am not 100% convinced as the vehicle started making the noise 500m after it left the workshop and I never had problems...

    • The sound is present in all gears, except 5th.
    • Its still there, even in low range.
    • Not present when clutch depressed or coasting.
    • Whine returns as soon as my foot goes onto the accelerator.
    • Whine noise increases as revs increase.
    • They put some additive in the gearbox which subdued the noise for a day, but didnt really do much in the end.
    • Gearbox and TC oil levels checked.

Any ideas what it could be? A bit frustrated that I wanted peace of mind and now have another problem to deal with.

    Clutch release bearing.

Why do you think its the clutch release bearing? Surely that is part of the replacement kit and would have been replaced when they installed the new clutch? Why would it stop whining in 5th gear and then whine again in 6th?

Apologies for my ignorance, my mechanical skills are limited, albeit increasing every day I own this Landy.

If the noise goes away if you press the clutch, then usually it's the bearing. Only other option is the main layshaft bearing in the box

5th gear is 1:1 on the puma...maybe that will help someone who needs to diagnose the issue.

Release bearing does not form part of the clutch kit, but best to replace with slave while gearbox out

Can it be that the bellhousing is scew and tension is on the spiggot causing the whine? Maybe

Trying to rule out obvious faults.
It does not make sense for a gearbox or T case to start whining after a clutch replacement?

Are you sure it is the same gearbox as before? Devils advocate I know.

If your boxes was not opened it should not whine unless like the other posts suggest it to be the thrust bearing.
Other than that I have no clue.

Dont these Puma boxes have a known issue on the output shaft from g/box

    might be wrong though

Yep. I've heard that these spud shafts run dry and the bearing fails?

From my research it does seem that the spigot bearing could be a possible cause.

This is my greatest fear - having changed the clutch under warranty, maybe they thought they could do the same with an old gearbox they had lying around. Again, this is definitely far fetched for a reputable place (but this time around I did make a small mark to check, just in case)

Yes, the 5th is the direct drive on these MT82s if I am not mistaken. I need to ask if they did the release bearing (it would be silly if they didnt do it). I did however put in a slave while this whole process was going on - better to be safe than sorry - and given that the gearbox was out, it was an opportunity to get it done.

I presume they took the complete Gearbox and Transfer box out as a complete unit and did not split it?
I found that I have a bad whine after I worked on my Gearbox and Transfer box. I found the Shift to High Low was not quite the same as before and adjusted the linkages to a more Natural / comfortable setting, I found the whine decreased dramatically. Suppose it was the High / Low teeth running on the edge as they were not properly meshed. Maybe your problem?

It is a known issue, but as far as I understand it makes a clunking noise when shifting, not a constant whine.

As a side note, this looks like a nice upgrade to do one day:

These guys have the same spec vehicle as mine, so its always nice to see how they fix their problems before I tackle my own:

    That might be a clue

My 5 speed box is straight thru in 4th
maybe your straight thru is 5th ?

On puma the 5th is 1:1 so straight through 1st 2nd are lower gears then normal and 6th is literally the same as 5th on R380

    Enige vordering Stofdonkie?
