Default New GWM P Series or Used Hilux?

Its Friday, lets collect some data just for the fun of it - if you had to, what would you choose - a brand new GWM P series, or, a used Hilux?
From a brief fiddle on autotrader, it looks like an auto P series is around R420k or so, and so the equivalent hilux 2.4 is around a 3 or four year old, with >120 000kms.

This is for an auto, double cab.

Its just for interest. Im noticing more and more of these P series out there, and, from my look at autotrader, they look like very very nice cars, but, if it were me, hmmm, I just dont know yet.

If its none of the above, then can I suggest you please go back to the Mitsubishi section, thanks.

Depends if the Hilux was chipped. Standard it is a toss up. Chipped Hilux? then rather a new P series.

I will consider one if it can do 200k km trouble free on the mines in our area. Before that I will rather play safe and go with a Hilux.

If I lived in or near a town I might consider the GWM, but we did a trail with 2 and we are back to Japanese brands.

No disrespect to anyone that owns one....

NEW, any GWM/Haval vehicle is quite nice.

It's what comes after some mileage and years.

I will consider the brand again (after a not to satisfactory short ownership of a DC in 2012) if a GWM vehicle is in the same nick after 10-15 years as one of the established brands.

If you look at this video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4naJImpfCw

You will see a section where they take the P series out on the dunes, the one thing that really stood out for me was the way the "bak" shakes, it doesn't seem as sturdy as the comparative bakkie.

Other than that the vehicle seems very nice and I suppose if you aren't going to be loading the bak and travelling over corrugations often then you could possibly overlook the shaking.

Get the Hilux... Been driving a 2011 Hilux on the mines in Secunda area and now around 360000 km and still going without even a bit of trouble.... Even got the original clutch and turbo still...

I think this will cause bin cracks in the future. I doubt that it was designed to do that.

Hi Graham, I would also consider which vehicle would hold its value overtime and going with the hilux should get most of your money back when/if you decide to sell.

What about a second hand Pajero?
    Everything is a hammer.
Unless it is a screw driver.

I have to add it was some of the early ones, not recent. I dont have experience with the recent ones and they sound much better.

We had a diesel and a petrol, We got rid of the petrol at 27 000km , by that time it had been towed in 2 times, had radiator replaced and was still overheating, the Diesel managed to reach 50 000km its body was disintegrating.

The dealer was giving a lot of assistance, and at the price point it would still make sense for someone near a dealer, but not out here.

That will be a totally unfair fight. You don't bring a gun/Pajero to a knife/P-Serier/Hilux fight.

A big consideration for me is value retained after 5 years and 1xxx xxx km. With a Jap bakkie you can expect some money back, GWM... Not so sure, only time will tell I suppose.
