Default Toyota Landcruiser 105 or 76???

    Morning

i dont know these vehicles but what would the better option be?

    2007 105 GX 4.2 diesel with 123 000km on the clock

    2013 4.5D V8 diesel with 65 000km on the clock

price difference will be roughly 200 000

both are in very good condition and both white, not a lot of extras but vehicle will be towing.

    thanks

I will NOT use the 4.2 diesel for towing. Unless you are very very patient. It is a donkey at best of times. And I bet the fuel consumption towing will be very near to the 4.5D V8

However, 200k capital outlay buys a hell of a lot of extras.

Is this purely a holiday vehicle or also a daily driver?

    Towing/daily driver - the 76 V8

    Not towing/holiday vehicle only - 105

The 4.2 is not a pleasant vehicle to tow with BUT in all other respects it is great - loads more space and nicer drive than the 76.

If you plan to tow the Miskruier in your Signature, I would'nt look at the 1HZ. They're OK up to around 110 km/j or so (without something in tow), but run out of breath.
The VERY best in slow offroad work though, like in THE best.
As an overlander, ultra reliable, lower speeds, NO contest.
The 105 is also a VERY comfy, quiet ride, with a proven chassis (its the 80 Series chassis in essence). Spacious, solid and quiet.
But I wouldnt consider it as a towing vehicle.

I echo what everyone above has said three times over, a 105 with that mileage is a unicorn find! However, the second you mention tow and a 1HZ in the same sentence, that option falls away.

I tow with my 79 1Hz, loaded, Alucab Canopy, RTT and old Jurgens Fleetline, app 4.5 ton total. On a level road with no wind it is fine, against a wind or uphill you battle to keep up with some
trucks. Typical the climb from Pietermaritzburg to Howick it go down at places to 60km/h, 2nd gear. So from Rocky Bay to Pretoria will take app. 2 hours more but it get me here and I can
pack what I want. So if you are patient and don't want to tow too far every day it is fine. Overtaking is a problem so as said patience is needed. Only get app 5 km/L from the Southcoast
    back to Pta.

Hein is the 105 in Namibia? And what price if I may ask? I am looking for a neat 105 diesel as a project vehicle.

Hein, dont want to over analyze anything here.......BUT if you're interested in the V8 D4D, and you are going to use it as a daily drive, just take it for a spin and see if you're comfortable at the RPM at around 120/130 km/h.....just saying.
There is a mod on the 5th (longer gearing) BUT then again, I'm not 100% sure that would be the right ratio when towing.

Personally...I'd take the 105. Without a shadow of a doubt. Speed is not my thing when "4x4-driving" thats why I have motorbikes. The 76 that my sister/swaer had was very, very, VERY uncomfortable for my 1,95m, 120kg frame, in South Africa. It boggles my mind the price you pay for a new version of the 76. They have their place, and in my mind, it's not necessary for anyone ever that doesn't drive on a mine road DAILY. Before anyone criticise me, look where I am. I deal with these vehicles daily. No doubt in my mind the 105 is the one I'd choose...

If the speed of towing is the concern to you between these two vehicles. I would hazard a guess, and say you could use any other 4x4 generic vehicle. Both these vehicles are purpose built 4x4 "tourers" if I could call it that. Both will do the EXTREEEEEEEM slow rough stuff very well. The 105 will be vastly more comfortable. If you're not going to be doing the extreme slow rough stuff. Any generic double-cab 4x4 will be a better option... and safer!

I do have a double cab one of the better ones if not the best at this stage. But what is uncomfortable? I drove last week almost 700km in the back of a LC double cab and everyone said ita cramped and uncomfortable in the back. Well for me it wasnt that bad its not a new double cab but its not that bad space wise. Yes it is a bit of a schlep to get in and out i agree.

So what is so uncumfy in the 76? Will only be me and swambo ahe is not even 1.6m and i am 1.85 so we are not the biggest? I think if unsit at the back u gone be jumping around when go over speed bumps or bumoy road as u are sitting on the back axle. But in front i cant thinks its that baf space wise.

Anyway im still pondering and g9ne drive it anyway before i make a decision.
