Default Testing a Diesel Engine's Health.........??

    Hi Guys

Prospective Buyer wants me to test a Land Cruiser 1HZ (4.2) Diesel Engine, car has 240kkm on the clock without a FSH, so that's a fair request.

I called around, there are places that can do a Compression Test but its a HELLUVA long (labour) job, and one Guy tells me there is a risk of breaking a tip etc etc.

.........What other "tests" can I offer to do here except that Compression Test??

A pressure test, at Silverton - surely that would also help, give an idea of the radiator and top's condition??

Vehicle starts at the touch of the key, pulls great for a 1HZ, so ja......again, I understand the Request, but its just one HELSE story to do it. And assemble eveything again, what about if a tip breaks or an injector leaks after that?

    Any pointers welcome

For me, in absence of a compression test, there is only one other test. Cold start. If it starts immediately after the glow plug light has gone out and runs smoothly immediately with no blue smoke, it's fine.

Oil analysis - Wear check? That is the only other option I would think of? I have never done it, but I assume the oil needs to have been circulating in the engine for some time to get a decent result?

I know the serious heavy equipment guys swear by this sort of thing so there must be some value in it.

Francois yes the Buyer actually requested a cold start video this morning - starts up immediately.

But Buyer is fine with NOT doing the compression test, he understands, not a moeilike Guy at all. I just want to do SOMEthing else without him even asking.

    Thanks so far.

you can also pull a thin plastic surgical glove over the oil Filler cap ( cap removed) and run the engine. If glove inflates there is blowby.

Not an accurate test. All engines have "blowby" - hard to diagnose unless the person is aware of what normal blowby at 200k km looks like in a healthy engine.

@Petri Oosthuizen main things are smoke, colour of the latter, colour and smell of the oil etc. But an oil analysis would definitely give the best picture.

When it burns less oil than diesel, I would think itís good. My TDi 300 Defender with 330k on the clock goes 10k not requiring a single drop of extra oil. At least in my case the engine has been rebuilt. I should add that after standing for nearly 2 years it fired on the first swing.
