    Default Blanking out number plates

    Honest question.

Why do people blank out their number plates when posting a picture of their car on the forum?

Do you also blank out your number plate while driving on the highway? Or ask AARTO to redact it on all their systems?

The way I see it, we drive by more dodgy people on the roads than those who visit a forum to look for a number plate to clone...

Probably learning from our esteemed law abiding leaders. Saw a fleet of them, probably transporting Cereal or one of the other toss pots, and not a license plate in site. They did however have time to fit blue lights all over the show.

    For the sake of Safety.

You can get mt Number and go steal the exact same Car, or put my number on your already stolen Car ("you" not meaning "You", of course)

There are guys with enough ninja skills that will be able to tell you your underwear size from the info they got from your name and number plate.

Edit: not all of them are ethical hackers.

But they can do that by walking through any parking lot as well. Much easier than browsing a forum to look for a photo I would think.

I don't understand the logic at all. There must be a better reason?

It is a practice followed by some of our more paranoid members. Masking their number plates apparently makes them even more anonymous. Being more anonymous, they can therefore be even more passive aggressive whilst hiding behind their forum names. I mean - sure, with a license number one would probably be able to work out a large chunk of information related to the owner... But only if one has access to eNatis or one has a friend at one of the manufacturer's service centres. Etc.

For us mere mortals that don't have access to eNatis or sources of information, there are waaaaaaay much easier ways to work out who somebody is, normally starting with their forum names and posts.

It's probably bad news for those who are prone to wear tinfoil hats, but I personally believe anonymity is not really possible on a forum such as this.

I (but not I) can do exactly the same with a cell phone camera at the mall, in the street, etc.

I blanked them out initially, but I don't see the sense in it.

Yes, most members list their names and vehicles.
Adding reg no won't change much.

One does not need a number plate in order to work out who is who in the zoo. In fact, the majority of us mere mortals have no access to number plate information...

As mentioned, to protect identity mainly. You'd be surprised the lengths some people go to, even on the forum.

Not having plates is a South African hobby. In Durbs, given the metro cops are bought, paid for, and do absolutely zero about law enforcement, using plates is entirely optional. If you see a car from some areas with plates then you know they're forged.

But how do you protect that identity (I assume you drive with number plates on?) while going to the shops, down the highway ect ect?

I'm just trying to figure out why people will blank the number plates on a forum, but not while driving where I guess more skelm eyes can see it?

It's not a big deal but erring on the side of caution. The vehicle registration number is available to anyone seeing the vehicle in a parking lot or on the road. But those who see the registration know nothing about you. The issue is with someone tying the information you provide on the forum here with specific vehicle details.

As mentioned, it is not something that will make or break most folks privacy profile, but it creates an opening for an opportunistic no gooder lurking on the forum...
