Default Good products that lost their quality

I was thinking of how coke has managed to completely stuff up their best selling product by making it taste less like coke.
Then i was busy with work with the legendary BIC click pen and it starts falling apart in my hand while writing.
Surely they did not decrease the amount of glue that holds the pen together to save on costs?I mean it will use less than a match head amount to keep it together.
I use a lot of them and always buy the box of 100 and in the last 2 years I am getting more and more falling apart.
Whoever makes these poor decisions does not understand why the product did so well to start with.

    I agree with Bic.
Lion matches also rubbish now, so thin like wood splinters. And the 2 scratch pads on the box doesn't last for the amount of matches.

we go through hundreds of these bic pens in the office. Personally I have not had one fall apart on me, but our bookkeeper have complained about the pens falling apart as well. I loose pens as side hobby and on some days will go through a few of them. On interrogation it seems to be a couple per box of 100 so I’m not changing suppliers just yet. The reality is these pens are lost/pilfered anyway long before they wear out.

Maintaining costs is a difficult balance and manufacturers dont always get it right.

I once read that there are a lot of fake Lion matches out there. I really think the one you have there is fake.

No. I think the fake ones are better. Go buy lion from a reputable shop and see the quality.

Those BIC pens are made locally. BIC is global company. Their brand is valuable. Originating from France. Take some more photos of those failing pens and send e mail to France HO. Just in case keep those failed pens. Something will happen

BIC makes those lighters. Every year they cause fire accidents. 99.99...% of the cases are settled out of court. They make so many of them that even with very high reliability some fail.

Match industry history is an interesting one. Swedish immigrants had big influence. They are gone and the quality with them. BIC has not been good for match makers.

This happens when bean counters become CEOs of manufacturing companies instead of an Engineer

Ie: now a selling price/ profit margin is first determined and a product is build according

    vs

a product is build first then costed to determine a selling price.

Lion matches are just useless, cant even start a fire with the things.
Bought a few boxes of “Apple” matches at a china shop th other day. They were really really great. Would keep burning even in slight wind.
Ironically, I found Lion shaving cream to last long and are good qaulity.

Gillette cream I found poor value these days.

With Coke Im with you , the quality of the cheaper brands are getting better and coke worse, but more expensive .

Paul Simon describes the historical concept of how it should be - and was - in his song One Trick Pony.

That's all that horse can do - one trick - but he turns that trick with pride.

This is what has gone missing along the way.

-Cellotape: most of the brands hardly stick/last. Practically no adhesive on it!?
-BIC pens (I have had the clear tip section cracking and the pen not writing properly. I use this as my go too but buy 5 at a time as somthing fails)
-Basic kitchen appliances (almost everything only has a 12 month warranty. We are on our 3rd Russell Hobbs toaster (it matches the kitchen) in less then 5 years and its only the two of us... I remember my parents kelvinator fridge and some no name brand toaster lasted 15 yrs +)

I would say a lot of this comes down to planned obsolescence.. watch the light bulb conspiracy. If you cant sell them fast enough, make sure they fail soon enough. Its one way to ensure continued revenue.

Who still buys matches? I honestly cannot remember the last box of matches that I'd bought.
I have a couple of lighters all over the house and cars. Don't smoke, so don't need them too often.

As for pens - I just treat them as disposable items. They all break. Some just last a bit longer before breaking.

The Coke thing is interesting - I've had a quick look at their financials, and I don't think that complaining South African B&C's drinkers are of a concern to them. Most sales are being driven by the low-sugar products in their offering. The world is changing.
