Default Garmin Oregon 550 car power cable

Is there a way to power the GPS other than using the cigarette lighter plug?
I'm looking for a USB power cable that the GPS wont think it is connected to a computer.
Tried a USB cable before in the car but GPS goes into computer mode.

Do you plug it into the car's USB port? I use mine with a cigarette plug USB charger and it works fine.

Strange, I used a USB off a 2.1A feed and my Nuvi was happy.

Buy a suitable charging cable at a Chinese shop, it appears you are using a data cable that charges and carries data.

For my Garmin 276cx I cut the 12v cigarette plug off the end of the supplied cable, pulled my 12v socket out of the dash and soldered the wires to the back of the 12v plug. Presto - 12v power for my GPS without occupying the plug. I ran the wire behind the dash and up to the unit so there is also no wire dangling about.

Nice! Me too. Their main shop is just down the way from us. You can ride a demo from the factory right out their door and be on trails with an ocean view in 20min, it's pretty nice.

Garmin distinguishes a power cable from a data cable by connecting the 5th pin of the connector at the GPS end to ground via a specific resistor value. This ensures that you buy THEIR cable instead of using one you have lying around the house. Yes, I agree. Baastids!

With one resistor value the GPS will go straight into data mode without asking what it is you want to do. In this mode the GPS will not charge.

Easiest is to go buy a DIY set of these connectors at Micro Robotics in Centurion Technopark. They come in parts, allowing you to solder your own wires plus the correct resistor to the spare pin. Then you clip the covers on.

So cut off the existing GPS USB connector from any data cable and rewire with one of these, adding the correct resistor value.

    It will now charge.

Not keen on cutting the Garmin sig power supply I went to Chine mall in Centurion.
No one had a cable for USB so bought a sig supply for R100.00
Will see what Micro have. They not far from me.

    The connector below. Super cheap.

Here is how the wiring should be done - from a Garmin document:

I have done this mod, and it works, charging the GPS via a USB 5V output.

I don't know where they get a 17k3 resistor from. I see I have both 15k and 18k values. Can't remember which I used, now.
