    Default Loading a co-ordinate

    Morning,

Please can the cartograpers of the world untie and assist me....

How do you enter the below into a Garmin GPS?

What should my coordinate format and datum be set to on my unit?

This is like trying to decode the Rosetta Stone!

    You posted the waypoint as

    Deg Min Sec
(although I have doubts about your example - Min & Sec should be 60 max)

You have to convert it to decimal degrees.

How you do it will depend on how well you know your calculator.

    The formula is

    Deg +Min/60+Sec/3600

    (for both Nothings and Eastings)

    Your example:
    19.1054 S
    22.1255 E

You then enter the waypoint as

    Northing Easting
    eg 19.1054 22.1255

Or just set your Garmin to Lat Long - Deg : Minutes DM mode.

    It’s in the menu somewhere.

Ok! Now we talking! Thank you

This is why I did double science, history for matric.

Geography was just not my thing!

So why would a lodge give you that format if it needs to be converted?

There is no need to convert it. That is one format. Change your settings on your gps to that format and read it in. Then you can change back to format you prefer. And it will automaticly change to your preferred format. I prefer deg and decimal degrees. Degrees. Minutes. Seconds is the preferred format for land surveyors and it is shorters to display a very accurate coordinate. If you converter it you will see how many numbers there is after the decimal.
