Default EB License - Driving School and Test Station

I have recently ordered a caravan.

So now I have to redo my license (to get a EB license).

Does anyone know about a driving School that can assist?

Alternatively which test station should I go to?

This will be in the Roodepoort/Krugersdorp area?

Seems as if not all driving schools can do EB as well as the test stations...

it's an absolute pain to do an EB, all but impossible I found (down here at least) - I tried to organise it for my daughter when she did the test.

Easier to do an EC1 or even EC.

Will it be difficult to drive a EC vehicle?

I am starting the realise that it might be a pain...

How much does the test differ from the Code B test?

    well...

if you do an EB you'll need to parallel park the trailer. you need a big vehicle too - one that can tow, you won't do the test in an i20 like normal

If you do an EC1 you only have to reverse the trailer (alley dock) and you end up using a small truck (only just over 3500kg Tare) that is actually smaller than a bakkie, forward control so you can see the corners etc, with a big flat trailer behind it.

and , actually, an EC is even easier, but expensive as you need to hire a truck - but reversing a big rig is not difficult, the trailer is slow to react.

No you don't. Parallel parking is without trailer. All the rest with trailer.

I did mine in 2-3 weeks. But I'm in Pretoria. PM me if you'd like the details of the school I used.

The more I look at it the less obvious it seems to do...

Might have to consider to do it somewhere out of the city...

I did my EB license, had loads of practice before I went to a driving school. Don't know how much rules have changed since 2009. Instead of reverse docking, and a 3 point turn, you have to reverse the trailer for about 40m between lines, without touching the lines, you also have to reverse dock the trailer in between poles (the rest of the yard test stays the same). They check how you hook up the trailer and see how you do your checks. Obvious checks like that the trailer is connected properly and that the lights are working, etc. I towed with a 1300 tazz and my dad's double axle eagle trailer.

Wonder if I should take the chance to get my learners first and then get the trailer and practice a bit with it before I go and do the test?

    What does the test cost?

Thinking that I can try a couple of times before I get to what driver training will cost.

Is it really necessary to do the training?

"Wonder if I should take the chance to get my learners first and then get the trailer and practice a bit with it before I go and do the test? " Sounds reasonable to me. I got the caravan and next is one lesson and then the test.

"What does the test cost?" Learners is something like R130 in total. The driving test can't be that expensive (except the time out of the office).

"Is it really necessary to do the training?" To know what they look for, yes. Remember, the driving licence test is nothing like the day-to-day driving on the roads.

But can you afford the time it takes to make appointments and take the test 5 times?

No need to wonder, in order to do the EB test you MUST have a valid learners. They do not accept your current B license as a substitute.

Thing is I need to make time for the lessons anyway.

Maybe do the same as you? Practice with the trailer and go for 1 or 2 lessons only?

That is what I would suggest. I've been towing caravans and trailers since 1997 so I can tow and reverse and all that, but I know I will fail the test because they look for very specific things one doesn't usually do in normal driving on public roads.

Did my EB with my double cab and Echo4 in 2012 in Potch. There was a guy from the provincial department that did the test. Reverse part was in a straight line and ally docking around a slow bend. No 3 point turn and the rest is the same. And if you can parallel park, a Hardbody sized vehicle easily fits into the space provided.
    Learners is also a must

Step 1 done. Got the learners.

Now to book a test date - yes, you have to fill in the form, go stand in the row again, do the eye test again (which I did less than a month ago), go pay and book a date...

I'm going through all this now as I have a B licence and want to tow. I've opted to do an EC licence instead of EB - don't want to have to go through this again for any reason. Did my motorbike licence end of 2015 as well so I've had my fill of licence departments.

I've done about 4 lessons in the truck so far, struggled with the alley docking but am getting there. Instructor's lack of English doesn't help.

    Who are you using?

Must say so far everything at the Krugersdorp licensing station went smooth. Just need to book a date for the test. Will then go for some lessons. The guy I have in mind uses a double axle trailer which apparently makes it easier?

Managed to parallel park with the TB recently, so should not be a problem in a smaller car.
