Ek lees hier/read here some interesting remarks. Remarks that
Will signify personal experiences in die SANDF, in the years gone
by/verby. With all due respect, a force to be reckoned with!!
Me not readily bereid om dit te qeustion nie. I did my time 70/71.
My army number beginning with 68,.. blah blah a sapper. Juhíst
Sommer net nog weer , ín moer serving national duty! There I met
some characters(PFís with pink faces due to plastic surgery), a story
all of itís own. With the brutality of basics over and done I ended up
at the army college. A place where only the elite(officers) congregated
for further experience. 21 of us dpiís becoming free willeyís amongst
this lot. However the army college also stood proud, very proud, fostering
a wing called the PTIís. (Physical Training Instructors). The crossed swords
above a sergeants stripes. I occupied a hall right next door to their hall.
Good grief for the life of me maar daai manne het gekak hoor en hoor wat
ek se!! With stacked paper stock below my weary arse I sat there staring
through the window at them in full swing training A remarkable wing of the
SANDF,..too them it was even greater, a purple beret, their origin in the force,
With wings attached and some crossed swords between their stripes...you
manne out there, with all due respect the PTIísCalled for respect!! It seemed an
honour because of the hundreds that applied Many became RTUís sadly. My
intake witnessed a mere 160 that managed deployment across various sectors
of the defence force. But in the meanwhile the ugly side of war was well attended
and scrutinized in other rooms at that place.
The physical attributes, to this life cannot be made more or less, however can be altered to suit!!

Sadly this thread makes me think of the Rhodesian "whenwe" phase where everybody who came down from Rhodesia struggled to let go of their past

I did my time in the defence force as much as anyone did and have some good memories (not many , and still react physically to loud unexpected noises over 40 years later)
But that is is all they are is memories

The current government still see us as their enemies and will NOT acknowledge anything we did for OUR country as it was then or recognise any of our moments of pride.

So accept that we are a small and diminishing club of whenwe's that are only recognised by other whenwe members

I would love to see and hear the reactions from some of the "new troops" these days if spoken too/shouted at/ sworn at by the PFs of my day.

We thought it was rather funny some of the cruder expressions they came up with. No doubt the "new troops" of today would have them up at the Human rights council.

One of them was "Ek sny jou v*** af en druk hom in jou oor dat jy soos n petrol pomp lyk"

I am sure the guys that served would be shocked at the state of the bases these days? I know I am. Even basics like mowing grass and painting lines where they should be, which doesnít cost much money does not seem to happen any more.

Apart from that, the sheer loss of vehicles that could and should have been auctioned off and recycled. SAMILS, CASSPIRS, Buffels, early Nyalas.........

I'd have loved a SAMIL 20 as the base for an overlander vehicle.

No one is allowed fowl language of any nature. You will be on the red carpet double time.
Even ordinary, legit commands have been met with "f*ck you". Thats acceptable, if you catch my drift.
On the other hand hand, do you recall several shooting incidents such as Tempe Pay Office and the OC of SAAF College. After the OC of SAAF College was shot, his office was set alight.

    For those that are keen.

Here is a link to a show we did with Frans van Dyk. Founder member of 5 Recce.

He dives into selection quite a bit.

Yes indeed, a very superficial onslaught with little moral impact!!
I dare think this was deliberate in order for creating a so called
brotherly bond amongst the DP's. I even dare say that such behaviour
    became an attraction for enlistment.

Gosh we also had one, a staff sargeant, weather beaten too hell and
hiding behind ray-ban sunglasses in the absence of seniors!! My word,
I doubt the good lord above would even grant him a taxi too the pearly
gates!! Nooit, I dare even make a suggestion of his utterances.
