Default Accommodation for 2 Clarens - town

Guys & girls I have done some research, also on the usual accommodation sites, but could not see anything that grabs me. The closest I came to success was in this thread: https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...-place-to-stay

Swambo and I intend to go to Clarens end October. We are looking for a nice place to stay for 2 people, but in the town. There seems to be lots of posts about wonderful places on farms or outside Clarens but it is not one of those weekends...

We want to be able to walk everywhere from where we stay, but not too far from 'home' should we, hypothetically, get stuck in the brewery. One of her friends suggested this place, but for me it looks as if I can just hang over the balcony and order a drink from somewhere on the square, it is THAT central: https://www.sa-venues.com/visit/laposteapartment/ . So not quite what I am after.

So a bit upmarket, cozy, not on the square with adequate privacy.

    Any other suggestions please?

The convention rooms are pretty much hidden away in Protea Hotels.

The bar, lobby etc is all you will really experience.

Just be mindful of the what you need the accommodation to do for you. Hotels provide a great place to sleep, but if you just want to 'sit and relax', it really sucks inside a hotel room. Which means you either need to be outside the hotel room for the entire duration from breakfast to the time you go to sleep, or be in a public space in the hotel.

This is just from my experience

The Courtyard Bakery has 4 rooms on top of the bakery, very nice, on the square, almost next door to the Clarens Brewery. Safe parking too at the rear of the building. Highly recommended. 082 650 1503 The Courtyard, Clarens.

Clarens is a BnB haven. But that also means many of the places are in some tannie's back yard.

Not sure if you wanted full board or self catering. I assumed at least with an on-site restaurant.

If you opt for Bed Only at the hotel, you can stay flexible.

Hi Petri thank you for your reply, I was hoping you would weigh in as well. I see jelo knows Clarens quite well from other posts.

Obviously the spot I am looking for is not where you are going to stay for the Clarens Beer Festival type weekend, or just passing through and needing a bed for the night.

Please give me your 3 top choices. The place I listed is R1400 per couple per night, I was hoping slightly less but not a trainsmash.

    Thank you for your time.

Very true about the hotel room and I don't want that, we do want the "sit & relax" as well, so maybe that rules the hotel out.

Self catering is fine, maybe European breakfast, but I imagine we will buy from shops in the square (I read "bakery" somewhere?) and go out for lunch & supper.

We stayed in a very nice place next to the river in the road after the big church. They have a few different room options all of which are great. It's far enough out of town to be quite but it's only a short walk.
I'll look for the name and add it here.

    It's called Mont Rouge Guesthouse.

I phoned a Friend..attorney in Clarens...he wants to know if you guys:

    1) Self catering or B&B type?
    2) Rustic or more "formal"?
    3) Hotel type of acc, or more "on your own"?

Thank you for your trouble Petri, trust an attorney to come up with a questionnaire!

    1) Self catering; but don't mind if there is a light/European type) breakfast - so coffee & something included;
    2) Not rustic in the sense that I will go there with my hunting buddies; but also not servants all over the place formal. Bit upmarket, neat, but we can look after ourselves, as long as someone cleans in the morning. We will been lazing about town and eat at restaurants etc.
    3) On our own, do not need to see the owner/manager other than when checking in & out.
