    Good idea with pushlock and braided hoses. Why not fit a loose cooler in front. Will be better

    Agree the biggest oil cooler you can put in for a auto is the best, high oil temps kill auto box’s

    Some nice input here guys - thank you.

    I'm particularly impressed with the fact that you can get re-usable fittings so that you can make up hoses yourself. I always thought those "crimping" things were the only way. I'm going to look into this - so that I can make them up at home to the correct length, and play around with the routing and clamping them down. For engine oil cooler and power steering lines as well.

    So, the more reading up I do, the more these flexible lines make sense.

    The solid lines with the small flexible section, make sense for the original equipment version of the Disco - when it was new. After all, these lines run very near the exhaust. In fact, the more I think about it, perhaps it makes sense to leave a short length of metal line at this point. If anything had to come loose and burn on the exhaust, this would be a problem and would perhaps influence the reliability of the car.

    As for the rest - flexible makes much more sense. And actually, more rather than less flexible! The biggest problem might be temperature, rather than pressure, actually!

    A quick Google tells you that gearbox pressure is around 10 bar max in this auto box. But that's within the box. The return line to the cooler, apparently, empties back down into the pan, so would be a low pressure line. A couple of bar, max.

    Here's my temporary solution... remove the pipe, clean up and silver solder everywhere it looks like the leak could be.

    Ashcroft sells a kit with an autobox cooler and lines to retrofit to a Defender. A lot can be learnt from this. The biggest issue, is finding a way to get the existing nipples on the auto box side to connect to a length of flexible pipe.

    On the Ashcroft kit, you remove the nipple adapters from the gearbox and screw in a M16 (4HP22) or M18 (4HP24) banjo pushlock fitting. This seems like a very nice way of doing it, with one less connection to go wrong.

    What are the PTFE lines for?

    The braided rubber hose to replace the standard steel line for the gearbox cooler is AN8, thats what we just did on mine.
    Im nots sure if the autobox is different but the adapters to fit the manual box were M20 to AN8

    normaly the braided PTFE lines are used for HP as in supply from steering pump to steering box
    and also brake lines but use different fittings for brakes

    The auto box will take an M16 adapter.

    PTFE lines just to check the price difference. If not much more than rubber, I'll go for that. Will withstand the heat better and less likely to break up inside as well.
