Default These Ford engines are crap.

Iíve done 12000 km since I started driving my 2.2 Puma D/cab after the rebuild.
In 12000 km it didnít use a drop of oil or water, no smoke on start-up or while driving.
Standard engine map, bigger intercooler, EGR removed and de-cat done.

On Friday, driving at 100km/h, all of a sudden, clouds of blue smoke and loss of power. Coolant temperature normal, so it didnít overheat, it just decided to expire. Definitely lost compression on at least one cylinder.

    I suspect hole in piston.

Will strip the pos this week to see exactly what went wrong. All though in my opinion itís a crap engine, I like to keep things standard, so will rebuild or replace with new.

I hear the 2.2 engine new is much cheaper from Ford than from Land Rover. I will get prices tomorrow, I know the sump is different and probably some of the hanging parts, manifolds etc.

Does anyone know if the basic engine is exactly the same and if it will work to buy an engine from Ford and change the sump and bolt on the hanging parts from my old engine?

First question is when you did rebuild did you replace injectors?

Sorry, should have mentioned, I rebuilt the Landy (accident damage). Here’s the thread :https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...ead?highlight=

The engine is orginal and from what I could find out (previous owner etc.) it was serviced on time and never opened.

From what I could find out, it was serviced at Land Rover while under warranty and thereafter at a reputable Land Rover indy until it was involved in an accident.

Probably injector, Iíll have them tested, but definitely not caused by the fuel I use. 50ppm and my whole fleet runs on the same diesel with absolutely no problems.

I have personally fitted the cylinder head supplied by ford on a defender, and no problems there.

There is some minor differences between the hanging parts. But all the hanging parts can be built over from the old motor There is also no hole in the ford block for the oil level sensor, but that doesn't get used in the African climate. You can leave it unplugged.

I haven't had the opportunity yet to fit a complete motor or sub assembly but visually looks like it would work.

I donít think itís turbo. Lots and lots of blow-by when it idles with the oil filler cap removed.

I’ll get prices from Ford and Land Rover tomorrow, I remember Land Rover quoted me something like R112k for an engine for my 2.4 Puma. But from what you saying it sounds like a Ranger engine from Ford will work?

On the 2.2 I can't see any visual differences, except for the hole for the oil level sensor that isnt there. I think it will work. We took a chance on the cylinder head, there was almost a R25k difference between Ford and Land Rover's cylinder head.

Had a busy Monday, but got a price from my local Ford dealer for a new engine, that is basically sump to tappet cover, no turbo, no injectors, have to bolt on the hanging bits from the old engine. R48k incl. v.a.t.

I then went past my mate who owns an engineering shop and spoke to him. He quotes R45k to do a 2.2 complete, excluding injectors.

I asked him about the failure on these 2.2 engines and the cause of it, he rebuilds dozens of them a month.

    In his opinion:
He says he had to do a report for Ford warrantee on a Ranger with 14000km on the clock. Piston gone. That was the lowest mileage failure he dealt with.
He also had some coming in with 300000 km on the clock, never opened, but overheated at 300000 km and found very little wear on the sleeves.

95% of 2.2 engines going through his shop after breaking a piston, the injectors were tested to be 100%. So doesnít sound like injectors cause the failure in most cases.

His opnion is that the Ford pistons itself is of inferior quality and he rebuild the engines with AE pistons and says not one of his rebuilt motors came back with a broken piston or hole in the piston.
