Default N3 - Himeville - Then Up North but Where??

Guys......another Bike related Question to be honest BUT still also possibly useful to 4x4'ing.......if I may!

I can get a "lift" with my son Jomar next weekend (03/09) - they're a bunch of tjommies going to Ballito. Jomar can load the XT, and drop me off somewhere along the N3 , and the old ballie rides back home (Bethlehem) over 2/3/4 days.
Yes I know I'm "kroeking" a bit here, but also saving a day's riding down, so more riding in that area for me
What routes would you say would be nice??
I'm looking at gravel, NO highways, and camping where and when I feel like it.
Would like to include the following in my route.......apart from that, I'll just go with the flow (riding solo):

    1) That Himeville - Loteni - Notties road looks and sound nice

    2) That old railway tunnels pass thingie at Van Reenen

Jomar can basically drop me off ANYWHERE along the N3..........say, Howinck/Maritzburg/etc etc, but I dont want to ride ONE kilometre on a highway. I'm basically thinking getting off at/near Notties, and doing that Himeville via Loteni thing first, and then ride all along the Berg (Lesotho on my left) up north.

I'm looking at suggestions from Himeville, up North to Van Reenen area please.

    THANKS all suggestions very welcome!!

Petri, lyk my jy't jou eie vraag beantwoord! Laat Jomar jou drop by Howick by die R617 afrit en skiet Himeville toe.

STUNNING.

Lekker rustig ge cruise met openface helmet, Jack Daniels koffie en Camels as my gesleskap. Te heerlik.

Lewer vgde week 'n Ranger af in Howick, gaan vir Bettie agterop laai, en van daar af die keer weer "noord" van die N3 al met gravel travel terugkom. Maak sommer 'n road trip van die business trip.

So paar foudies, hoop dis OK, ek weet dis nie 'n Bike Forum nie

Cant help with much other than to say that the Himeville, Loteni, Notties road is a great scenic bike ride.

Andrew yes will DEFINITELY do that next week - missed it last time, with joining the familia at Fernwood. And then DEFINITELY also the old Van Reenens Pass Railroad.

I did the railroad about 10 years ago as part of a group. The best of my knowledge it is on private land and you need permission.

    not 100% on that.

Unfortunately I don't have a bike anymore to show you route 3 but if you want I can give you some info on a few of my favourite routes from time gone by:

The dirt roads between Notties and Bergville I don't know (a distinct gap in my resume) but there are 3 routes I enjoy from Bergville to Swinburne:
    1. Bergville to Swinburne via Bezuidenhouts pass. Would not do this alone on a bike
    2. Bergville to Swinburne via "The Lost Valley" ( Do some reading on the The White Tribe of the Lost Vallley)
    3. Bergville to Swinburne via Geluksburg, Sand River valley and then follow the cattle roads along the N3 and cattle tunnels under N3 to Van Reenen and then on to Swinburn.

Haven't been in this area for 3-4 years

Stayed over in Harrismith the Friday night.

Then outside Harrismith, turned left on some gravel road.......you then come at a T junction, Reitz right, Kestell left. Then did Phuthaditjaba - Kestell - Golgen Gate, then a bit of tar to Clarens, and then gravel again Clarens - Bethlehem. This piece was hectic, thick clay, full of tractor/harvester tracks, VERY difficult going......... actually didnt enjoy it that much.

Lekker pics Petrie, sounds like a good trip.

Did you ride into Clarens around lunchtime on Saturday? Someone on a bike like yours rode past me.

Ja I was there around lunchtime I think.......looked for an open spot but the town was VERY busy, so just took a spin around the square and went home. Blue gauze jacket, white open-face helmet, extremely good looking gent

Jokes aside, yes the town was extremely full, including quite a few biker groups, I must say it was nice to see.
