Long - Long Range tank for Defender 90

Hi,

we might be doing the Desert trip in Namibia....and for this i would need to have 200L of petrol with me. Now Currently I have a Extra tank so in total I have 95 odd liters, so that leaves me with about 110L to take with.

No the obvious choice is probally 6 Jerry cans with 3 dubble jerry can holders on the roofrack.....Problem is that Jerrycans are all of the sudden 300 bucks a pop.....so that totals R1800, 3 Dubble carriers is R1650 so in total you look at more or less R3500 for something that will live most of its life in the roof of the garage being stored.

Is there extra long range tanks one can fit to Defender 90 2.8i's?? And I don't mean the orginal left hand side tank, I allready have one, I need extra tanks....

My thinking is that if I can fit an extra tank somewhere for the same moola it will be much more useable item for the dollars.....

Where can I get it ??is it something you can buy or must it be made ??

Speak to 'Aubrey'...he had a 110l s/s fuel tank built into his 2.8i behind the front seats, between the wheel arches.

I have 2 extra tanks, 35 litres each. I think they are the Frontrunner ones.(Got the vehicle with them) but basically its one on both the left and the right. With electronic pumps. Yip it does mean an extra filler hole, and a bit of a sclep when filling cause you generally have to turn the vehicle around to fill the left hand side tank.

Jip my point exactly......that is just not Cricket........ so how viable is it to maybe try and fit the 5 cans in the back of the landy 90 ?? maybe build bracket that bolts into the body work?

Unfortunately carrying petrol inside the truck isn't a good idea either. Not much help I know.

Frontrunner make racks that carry your jerrycans on the side against the back windows. Fabfender has them on his 90. At least with these the weight is slightly lower down, but I think that an additional tank will be your best bet. I've also seen a Defender with two jerry cans on a bracket behind the spare wheel. Not too sure about the extra weight on the back door though. It may also be possible to mount a jerry can each side of the spare at the back, as low as possible.

Ok that sounds like the answer...........now comes the questions!!

* is this a auxilary fuel tank for the car ?? especially for Defender's?
* you say plastic, so then I sort of assume it something you take with like jerrycans?
* if so,where do you put it ? and how do you move the 120kg item if it is full to get the juice in the tank??

This is really a big problem......the extra tank i can get for the 90 Defender is just to small, I have 90 liters allready and an extra tank will only add 40 odd liters. leaving me 50-60 liters short(I need to do 600km at 3-4 km/l)

And Jerrycans on the roofrack will not work.......too much weight up there.....and jerrycans in the car will also not work.....fumes fumes............the jerrycans on the side wil be ok , but that is only 2 cans at most......need 4-5 with me.

I may be mistaken, but I'm sure I've seen a picture of a Defender with a double Frontrunner rack on each side.

That 120l tank is a rectangular tank. Just put it in your load bin. Attach a pipe to the tank and either just dispence into the main tank or fill a jerry can, then put it into the main tank. Once you decide to go this route, contact me and I can give you some tips. I operate 12 of these tanks and they can get very smelly if you aren't carefull and you don't handle it right.

mmmm , ok , Only problem is this is for a Defender 90....so I have no loadbin, it will then need to be in the back with all the luggage etc. Not sure it is a good idea to have a container with 120L of petrol inside the car........

Ok ,don't think it will be Front fender....having 100kg's on the right hand side of the front of the car will make for some very interesting steering !!! Those tanks are usually fitted in the rear fender......also it is for the 110 Defender and not the 90 as mine.....

That is why I said you must talk to me first.

Putting it with the luggage is no problem. Just some things to keep in mind.
Put an extended breather on the tank and make it vent outside.
Put a cigarette filter in the breather pipe. Will keep dust and wasps out.
Put a pipe on the tank with a tap. Thus you can dispence the petrol in a controlled manner.
Make sure that the cap has a proper seal. Else it will stink in the car.

When I send my 2700i to Zambia, I put 4 tanks in. 120l x 4 = 480l + 80l(main tank) = 560l. That then gives me a 5,000km range. (At 80km/h)

I use these tanks on a dayly basis and I am very happy with them. I have about 15 of them.

what does 1 of these containers cost ??
what is the dimensions of the box ?? (need to check if it will fit ....)

I've had a long range tank on the right hand side. 40L, with the extra filling hole on the side. That will take you to 135 L.

Why 200L?
Dont mean to assume anything, but do you need that much to get between fuel stops? Sure, some places may run out of fuel, so what if you need to wait a few days? What about other people carrying extra fuel for you. Are you going alone?
I believe 150kg is the maximum weight on the roof, i think. But dont go there.

Where are you planning to vist, BTW?

60 Lit FUEL TANK (Fluorinated) 840L X 360W X 220H - "HT025F"


120 Lit WATER TANK 820 X 500 X 300 - "HT014"

The plastic these tanks are made of is VERY stable, so the water/fuel or whatever, doesn't react with the plastic.

I usually pay about R1,000 for the 120l tank.
