Default VIN number and an old Range Rover

    Hey everyone
This must have come up for someone. I am busy with a change of ownership for an old classic Range Rover - 1979/80 the year I am a little unsure of. Leyland Blackheath built.

I have engine, chassis, model and serial numbers but no VIN. Which has caused a wobbly at the traffic department. The original paper shows it as unknown.

I was under the impression the age meant it was built just before VIN's were standardised as we know them now?

The department is requesting a GVM check and I need to take the car very far from where I stay to have certified with police clearance blah blah.

Has anyone been down this road, or is there a secret VIN on my car somewhere or is this the journey for old vehicles?

    Cheers

Found mine on the right front chassis rail, just in front of the steering arm mount.

Thanks for this I will take another look. It has been in my garage for some time and I have been under it many times and never noticed it.

It isn't a VIN, they had chassis numbers.

I was always under the impression that these old cars did not have a VIN.

Arguing with a govt official even if they wrong is pointless, perhaps go a few times, you may get someone else behind the counter, or just jump their hoops.

Thanks so much Gary. I did locate my tag. My numbers match the model and series numbers on my builders plate.

I am wondering if this is in fact the vin they need....

Really appreciate the time you took to dig out this image. Click image for larger version.

Haha great thanks making head way. I will still need to go for police clearance it seems as the original paper work has 'unknown' for the VIN. But atleast I have something to go with now.

When did Land Rover VIN numbers actually change to the current 17 digit code containing all the information regarding build?

It must have been in the early 80s as the US Highway Code adopted the 17 digit VIN for vehicles produced in the US in 1981.
