Thanks for asking, I have exactly the same question, going to Fouriesburg for the coming long weekend. Traveling from Centurion.

We just came back from that direction. On the way there, we drove N3 an turned off at Villiers, and then went Frankfort , Reits, Bethlehem.
It was really bad. Lots of road works, where one had to drive in the side of the road . See pic.

On the way back north, we went further towards the west. So from Bethlehem, up to Lindley , but then we made a navigational error and went up to Heilbron, but via Petrus Stein. (There is a more direct road from Lindley to Heilbron) but that road via Petrus Stein was particularly bad with potholes.
Also driving towards Sasolburg was a PITA with traffic and not many overtaking opportunities.

The best way I believe is stay on the N3 and get off only at Warden. But I have heard that there are stop and go's on that R714, a month or so ago, but if I had to do it again, I'd wager going on that route....

Between Frankfort and Reitz they are working on the road, and large sections you drive on gravel next to the road... not bad gravel, but gravel none the less...
Road between Bethlehem and Fouriesburg lots of potholes as well...

Just spent some time in Clarens and the road from Fouriesburg to Ficksburg is particularly bad with Max speed only about 60-80 km/h and plenty trucks.

This my preferred route now, I drive this 4 times a month..

Bethlehem to Fouriesburg road is horrible, plenty traffic and large potholes. Much more pleasant going via Clarens

So we ended up finding a place a bit closer in Reitz. Opted to follow Google Maps instead of the route over Heilbron, it showed an hour difference due to traffic I am guessing. So I made peace with the idea of Road Works and taking it slow.

But what the all that is unholy is up with the condition of the roads in Reitz? Especially the part coming into town and the section going past the informal settlement. It is like all hope has been abandonment. Ironically their is a massive board in town that says Reitz Road Department.

    With that of my chest.

Was just there. Can confirm this is still the best route, although we went straight from Bethlehem to Fouriesburg though. Potholes on the Bethlehem -- Fouriesburg route but nothing crazy, just Keep an eye out.
