Default Selling trailers to "out of country" people via courier....

So, recently... I've advertised my trailer on Gumtree.

I've had two very similar interested buyers. The one guy said he was based overseas working on an oil rig and that he would send a courier to collect the trailer. I then said I could drop the trailer off with his "family" in Welkom and I sent him a copy of my ID and bank details for him to make payment and then never heard from him again and he doesn't respond to my emails.

Today, I got a message from a chap named who works in the USA, but says that he is based in the Free State when he is in SA. He also says that he only uses PayPal and then he would send a courier service to collect the trailer, etc. This guy at least has a WhatsApp number to communicate through. He said he would make payment as soon as I've sent through a copy of ID and proof of address.

Both 'deals' seem a little dodgy and so I was just wondering anyone else out there has had similar encounters, good or bad?

Thanks guys.... You never know these days :-(

Wait until Elvis the truck driver from Namibia phones. He pays in diamonds and you get a much better deal

    Dude, be careful...........VERY CAREFUL.

    1) You're sending your ID, proof of address, phone number and banking details to an unknown person? Have you heard of identity theft?
    2) NEVER EVER take a trailer to somebody unless a) you have the money AND IT HAS CLEARED AND YOU HAVE TRANSFERRED IT OUT OF THAT ACCOUNT, and b) You meet at a SAPS station.

    You have been warned.

Best case scenario: you account will be hacked when they do a SIM swop and clean you out
Worst case: you lose a trailer and maybe your life

EDIT: and I had to execute a LOT of restraint in this response.

Not to mention the scamster will no doubt use your ID as proof for his other scams. Expect your name to crop up in a few scam warnings over the next while. If you are unlucky you can expect charges to be laid against you

He's going to ask you to pay the courier on his behalf and then he will include the courier fee when he pays you.

    It's a scam.

Yep. Your trailer pic, your name and a different cell-phone number will be everywhere.

Talk to Ian to maybe assist with this matter.

Thanks very much guys... its a pretty scary thought nowadays what people get up to.

Wish I hadn't been so trusting and stupid, especially in this day and age. :-( Now that I've sent my ID, etc.... What do I do next?? Please help!

Just keep it. If anything happens connected to this guy, go to the SAPS. But I guarantee you that is a stolen ID.........so yours will also be used for fraud.

Both are classic scams. The oil rig one is so old I swear it's got grandkids already.

In the US you can actually “lock” your credit profile with all three credit reporting agencies. This prevents any credit check being run - you have to actually unlock your credit before applying for something. Not sure if something similar is available in SA. It’s the same company. But this only helps with people obtaining credit/loans in your name.

Moodles, this is a scam. I have been there. Next is the truck collecting equipment for De Beers and the truck driver needs a lift from you to collect money for diamonds sold.

Stop wasting your time with these buggers. They can keep you busy for weeks.

Tell them to go away, in no uncertain way.

This is a scam. I advertised a roof to tent and on a different occasion a drop down fridge slide for sale on Gumtree. It's amazing that on both occasions a guy working on an oil rig with family in the Free State wanted to buy the articles and pay for them through PayPal.
I sold them to people who actually came to see the articles.
