    Default UK ZA dual citizenship

I assume there are numerous people here who have a UK passport and live in ZA and may have a ZA passport as well.

What is allowed and are there changes in the offing?
    4x4 less.

I have both UK citizenship (through my father who was born there) and South African citizenship through birth here. I have both passports and have regularly used one or the other or both to travel depending on the destination(s) and visa requirements. As long as you leave SA on your SA passport, and enter on it again, they're not fussed at the border. Likewise on the other side, if you have the correct entry documents in the relevant passport, no problem.

Still allowed, just must not take British Citizenship before applying for permission for dual from SA, or will lose SA citizenship.
Only changes I am aware of relate to double descent possibilities for those who have Maternal grandparents of UK origin

It is still allowed. No changes that I am aware off.

You must just follow the in&out rules. Come in on the same passport you left with.

    As far as I know:

    - you leave ZA on ZA passport and enter UK on UK passport
    - you must return as above: exit UK on UK passport, enter ZA on ZA passport

However the above could be the area they will want to change.

I have Irish by birth and SA when I became a citizen. Could also have British by virtue of being born in the North of Ireland. Have been able to pass this privilege on to my kids.
    Never leaving here though.

You cannot lose SA citizenship as far as I understand, it's guaranteed in the constitution.

I have not seen any plans to change the rules.

On the airport it is a bit more complicated than said above:
    - On the booking counter show European passport = no visa asked for
    - Any further or earlier security check and entry to the plane show European passport
    - On the border give South African passport

When entering countries excluding EU/UK always check visa rules. For instance Egypt have/had free visa for ZA but USD 10 in cash for EU. Not sure about UK.

I had hassles leaving on SA passport, entering Mud Island on UK passport, exiting UK on UK and then re entering SA on SA.

No onward destination stamp in SA passport.

Had to explain what I did and received an official warning in SA one.

I had my Perm Residence stamp in UK one.

    Just double check this!

My understanding, when we did my sons dual citizenship is:

If not citizenship by birth right (UK), the following is applicable.
If you apply before your 18th birthday, you do not have to inform the SA embassy.
If you apply after your 18th birthday, you have to inform the SA embassy BEFORE you apply for the second citizenship or they will renounce your South African citizenship automatically and without informing you. You will get the surprise that you are no longer welcome in your birth country when you then apply for your next SA passport renewal.

Ian is correct, must advise SA Home Affairs that you want to retain your SA citizenship.
If not they will automatically terminate your citizenship once you are registered in the UK.
Benefit of retaining your SA status is you can maintain your SA bank accounts.
Have a few tax clients who didn’t keep their SA status and now can’t get refunds from SARS as a simple example.

Yes, this is correct. We are going through this at the moment, my wife can apply. However, we've been told by a number of people at Home Affairs that they are not currently issuing the letter of application to retain your SA citizenship, no indicating on when they will start doing that again.

I seem to remember a question “have you ever applied for citizenship of another country”, to which, as a Soutie automatically given SA citizenship, I can truthfully answer “no”. My children all have dual citizenship, with the UK one applied before 18. My eldest needs to renew hers…..

Thank you for this info, im a dual UK SA and both my sons can get UK as i was born there. Will apply for both before the reach 18

By SA embassy, do you mean Home affairs in SA or SA embassy in London?

another interesting question is how does home affairs SA know when you apply for a UK passport? Does the British home office inform them?

I'm in the process of getting all my docs together to apply for a British passport as my mum (mom) was born in the UK.

I started the process at SA home affairs to apply for retention of SA citizenship document, but then heard subsequently it could take up to a year or perhaps not even at all.

Then I went through a private company who was able to get it, as well as my unabridged birth certificate (which is also required). Took about 3 weeks.

I applied my naturalization and passport in ZA embassy in Finland. Passport, birth certificates etc. can be done in embassies. Not drivers licenses. I was in London when my step daughter did something for her kids. Step daughter is ZA. There was a long queue on new mothers registering.

    The travel thing is simple

If you are ELIGIBLE TO HOLD a ZA passport, you may not present any other passport to a ZA customs official

You don't need to pretend you don't have another. You can quite happily go through every checkpoint with both in your hand and ask the official which one he needs to see.
