Default Fortuner GD6 2.8 Manual Tyre Size increase

So I need to change tyres within the next 6-8 months.

Currently has 265/60R18 and considering changing to 265/65/R18

What I need to know from people who have done so is the following:
How will it effect fuel consumption?
How will it effect gearing? what will the influence be? Currently I can stay in 6th most of the time and can tow in 5th without changing gears often.

This will be for the GD6 2.8 Manual (suppose it will apply for the Hilux as well).

If I look at Errols tyres I have the following options:
    BFG KO2
    Cooper Discover AT3
    General Grabber AT3
    Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10
    Yokohama Geolander G015 A/T

Thinking it will make a difference offroad, but don't want to compromise on On-road.

Doing some Internet searches (as well as checking forums) information seems limited.

Some guys claim to have done it without having problems (even on standard suspension).

Then there is someone who fitted BFG and claims that it catches on the front mudflap.

Someone else claim rubbing can be prevented by adjusting wheel alignment...

So mine is an auto...but if you are going BFG KO2 in 65 profile it will rub if you do not at least fit strut/coil spacers...

I have 65 profile BFG KO2 fitted on my gd6 AUTO hilux...I am not really worried about consumption having come from a v8 diesel cruiser but the performance of my gd6 was really not impacted at all...

The lift is not a problem as I already have OME installed since new.

So it seems as if it might be possible.

Dink 'n 285/60/18 sal ook werk as jy reeds effens van 'n lift het

I have 265/70/17 on my Fortuner (Same size as the 265/65/18), with no catching, albeit being a different model to the new shape. I do also have a 50mm lift

I ran 265/65/18 Cooper AT3's on a standard suspension Fortuner and now standard suspension Legend 50 with no issues or rubbing at all.

... to add that on a different GD6 Dakar I have BF KO2 265/65/R18 with FOX suspension and also no issues at all.
FWIW, of the KO2 and AT3 LT's I will standardize on the KO2 going forward. No issues with either but prefer the KO2

    You have a pm

I found the the 265/70R17 scrub on the upper control arms. There is less than a fingers space depending on the tyre. I have settled for 255/75R17 BFG and they ride well.

So, I took the plunge today...

    Changed from 265/60R18 to 265/65R18

Will put a video together on it as well.

No problem on rubbing (made sure).

Yes, I changed all 5 tyres. Personally I won't do 5 tyre rotation again. Dont like it that all 5 tyres are at different wear patterns, will only rotate front to back etc.

    There were no fitment issues:
    • Spare wheel fits
    • Upper control arm does not touch (I would say at least 15 mm clearance)
    • No touching when turning the steering wheel (gap can even be increased by adjusting the castor, was adjusted to about 1 degree Positive)
    • No problems with full wheel travel (front and rear)

That's my experience as well, although I do the 5 tire rotation every 10,000km.

Recently fitted new tyres and in this video I explain why I selected BFG and the questions I had before selecting these tyres.

What would you say was the overall impact on fuel consumption over a longer period?

I have not really measured it scientifically, but would say it will sit at 9-9.5 km per liter.

Remember that I went with a heavier tyre as well.

Towing the Bush Lapa it is at 7-7.5 km per liter.

For me the benefits was definitely worth it.

Here is the link to my 10,000 km review on these tyres.

I try to answer some of the questions around the tyres with background.
