    Default Jimny 4x4 -Trailer combo

    Good morning ,
Observed this combo on the road last week.
Just wondering how this combination performs on the road and off-road fully laden.
I know the vehicle is very capable off road , also very fuel efficient.
Has anyone on the forum any information on the towing capability of the Jimny.

I would say that the combo as pictured is probably illegal.

However, without knowing the details on the trailer construction, it MIGHT be possible.

Plenty of threads discussing GVM, GCM, Tare and towing restrictions.

    Hi,

Looks interesting but looks rather large but probably just an illusion. Just love the Jimny look.

The Jimny can only legally tow a trailer below 750kg and then it has to have a braked axle. Metalian have developed a really great trailer called the genie with exactly this in mind (see here https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...e-Super-Thread). The trailers have been refined a lot since the pics in this thread but it will give you an idea. Speak to Heinz from Metalian (https://www.metalian.co.za/), he is on the forum as well. There are also other off road trailers like the Jurgens XT65b (braked) that will work nicely.

PS. Jimny's are not fuel efficient, particularly when modified slightly. Towing a trailer like this you will struggle to get better than 13L/100km under average conditions.

I think there is a member on here with a Jimny and Genie combo maybe they can give more insight into ownership

    Cheers

Not sure on the legality or towing performance of the current Jimny.
But the combination pictured seems to be a pretty common one.
Looks like one of the Moremi models made by Custom Canopies in Pretoria.

Personally once owned and drove the previous shape Jimny. Not sure if it was the lift, slightly bigger tyres or the snorkel on it, but it struggled at anything over 100kph. Looked for a trailer for it at the time. There were not many options a couple years back, that were legally a viable option, was also concerned about performance. Was nonetheless an awesome little vehicle. So never ended up buying a trailer and towing with it.
However nowadays there seems to be a lot more options as well as the new 1.5 engine. So there seems to be more Jimnys around and towing trailers.
A bit of a sidetrack to your original post on the combination, but as mentioned looks like a Moremi in the picture.

    Regards

Saw this rig in Tzaneen a while ago. Spoke to the owner who said it was no problem towing as they had come from Gauteng to the Kruger PArk. They were going back via Magoebaskloof. Spoke to them that evening and they said they had no problem towing up Magoebas which is quite a test. Not sure how legal the rig is. Moremi have a couple of trailers that can be towed by the Jimny. I will be trying out the Moremi Light. https://customcanopies4all.co.za/

From the Jimny Gen 4 (JB74, 2018+) Owners Manual

Maximum towing capacity (gross trailer weight; trailer with integrated drawbar, and cargo)
Braked trailer: 1300 kg (2866 lbs) only applicable up to 1000m above sea level, reduce 10% per extra 1000m.
Unbraked trailer: 350 kg (772 lbs)

However, seeing that the JB74 have only around 1100kg tare weight, that (1100kg) will be the maximum allowed with overrun brakes in SA. And with a push, if being weighed, you might get away with 550kg unbraked. But not recommended.

Edit: I see the Moremi XLT specs says it has tare of 250kg but GVM of 750kg, and it says nothing about brakes, nor is any brakes visible in pictures. So not legal behind Jimny JB74 however they try to argue it.

I don't want to get burned. I seldom post in this forum. Now and than a thread will pop up, which pushes me over the edge and I start tipping Honestly, towing anything with a Jimny is an adventure on its own. And if the trailer's weight is above 500kg it is a slow adventure from the word go. Only once in my life I pulled a 740kg trailer (with my Jimny) up Gamtoos hill on the N2 (near PE). Never again. No less than 3 truck & trailer passed me on the double line. I was doing 65 - 70 kmh. The trucks were about 5 to 10 kmh faster...
Moral of the story: If you own a Jimny you value compactness. Pulling a trailer is exactly the opposite of what you value. The biggest strength of the Jimny is its lightweight. A trailer nullifies that right there... I hope this helps someone.

I have the Gen 3 Jimny and tow a motorcycle trailer without any issues. (two-bike flatbed).
Anything larger than a 5 foot Venter-type trailer would be too much in my opinion.
As mentioned before , the Jimny is a small, compact 4x4, and if you can't carry all the stuff, you've either got too much, or have the wrong vehicle!
When going camping, we normally tow the small trailer to a central destination, unpack, set up a basecamp and then explore with the Jimny from there.
Jimny's are not your overlander type vehicle.... efficient as they are, there's horses for courses and the correct tool for the right job!

    My 2c worth....

I hooked my mini to TommyKnockers little red beast, It ran like a dream, braking was 100% and pulling the steering from side to side produced no nasty response. Even towing on a reasonably bad gravel road produced no problems. Mini was about 800kg with brakes

Ja, but you drive a Jeep AND don't like Landies, so your taste is suspect from the outset.

Not being snide at all, just tickling the Oom's ribs a bit.
Despite his feigned disdain for Landies, he is very much a closet Landy fan.

You'll KNOW when I am being snide, I promise you.

Suppose you have to find a suitable trailer. Was very happy with this one behind the Gen 3 Jimny, could maintain 100km. Found it at a local car dealer, still have it to date.
