    Default Viscous sheared off

yesterday, the ultra-gauge possibly saved my engine (I Hope!!)

temps suddenly spiked to 103, I coasted and it went to 95, stopped at the garage and water streaming out.

Viscous sheared off, probably hit the radiator or coolant pipe, hope my engine did not take any shots...

There was no noise at all, not even when it came off.. initially though it was a siezed bearing, but heard no lockup from the fan.. strange failure , but it had a viscous spacer fitted, could possibly have added extra stress on the fan.

Wow. I hope your engine is ok. Iíve never heard of a viscous shearing off.

Very strange indeed. If the fan is turning, either by the engine when engaged or by the wind, then it is almost impossible to shear off like that.
I think the spacer caused the viscous to be off balance or not butting properly. That put strain on the shaft and snapped off, or maybe a factory defect?

exactly, and if it had locked up completely there would have been a serious noise from the fan blowing, still should not be able to shear..

and if it had come of at speed it would have sounded like the engine was falling out..

Ai, and I just spent a shed load recently on all "hang on" parts around the engine... except a new Viscous ... sigh

8k for just the radiator or radiator plus viscous?

Probably vibration fatigue failure from step in shaft + incorrect/ damaged radius + vibration. Lots of Tata bakkies suffered from similar failures initially

awesome. keep an eye on that coolant gauge. I assume you have a proper one?

Just avoid Tata Telcoline part number 254720150126 !!

Where is the "viscous spacer" fitted? is it aligned?

The fracture face should give a good indication of flaw origin/ type of failure.

yes, the digital gauge usually sits at 80 degrees, it went up to 103, then dropped to 95 when I coasted..
the factory gauge was still wondering if it should respond

it sheared between the actual viscous nut and the fan, the spacer is made on a lathe and balance tested .. so maybe a dodgy viscous??

thinking of fitting a fine stainless mesh guard on the inside of the radiator, but that might be overthinking it and maybe too paranoid.
