Ek gaan so 2x per jaar daarheen, so ken die pad redelik goed.

    Net my persoonlike opinie

I towed a Metalian Maxi down and up a few years ago with a Pajero LWB and it was totally fine, used low range and locked the auto box in 1 and 2 on the way down and then in 2 on the way up and took it slow, no problems.

    But….

The Swartberg pass is not allowed to have caravans towed over it, so just check that out before you go.

I went down Gamka many years ago with Pajero and Xplorer. I think a 4x4 with low range is needed if towing there.

I chatted to the Sanparks ranger before. I spoke to the Prince Albert Police before. I knew my combination for many years. I timed it to be on the road when the least amount of traffic was on the road.

It turned out to be very doable. Just be sensible and don't rush it. And maybe don't tell too many people as some will want to tell you that you are an idiot and a danger to society. Points to ponder when sitting and staring at the stars down there.

Is there a save place to leave your caravan (Explorer) and do the Gamkaskloof?
Can it be done in one day ,the return trip.

I have towed off road trailers over the Swartberg many times, and once down to the Hell and it was no issue, but the trailer has a GVM of 750kg.

A few years back we left our Metalian at the campsite in Prince Albert while we spent a few days in Gamkaskloof.
The campsite is on an olive farm about 1.5 km from the centre of town.

Doe grootste probleem is as jy verkeer vam voor kry, em jy moet vir n ruk reverse.

Just know that if we meet up on a narrow spot and cant pass each other I'm not the one who is going to do all the reversing. You bring it you reverse it!

Default Gamkaskloof (Die Hel) met BL

I drove the road a couple of weeks back.

There is a little eatery on the Oudtshoorn side where you could unhitch your van and leave it, just speak to the proprietor, he seemed an agreeable fellow. If coming from Prince Albert, I would leave it in town at the Hotel parking.

Yes you could do the trip from there to Gamkaskloof and back in one day, but it is a 4 hour drive... if all goes well

I would not venture there with a trailer/caravan unless I was forced to, and then I would do it with someone else that could go ahead and stop traffic at the 2 major(hectic) passes.. especially at the "Steps"

It is a serious drive, even without a van attached

It's technically quite easy... but as mentioned by a few, reversing when oncoming traffic comes along is going to be fun..

Technically it is very do able but a few sharp turns, and loose gravel with the Bushlapa pushing can make it into an interesting trip. Or if you have to reverse, much more enjoyable up and down without a caravan. Enjoy any case maybe sleep in one of the little farmsteads at the bottom one night.
