Default Orrie Baragwanath Pass / Lekgalameetse conditions

    Hi all

We'd like to spend a day driving through Lekgalameetse reserve via the Orrie Baragwanath Pass, travelling the up route from west to east the first week in August..

We drove the down route a year ago and what a fantastic wilderness drive!

Has anyone driven this pass recently? I know the area had a heavy rainy season after we were there last. Is there anything we should be prepared for?

And can anyone recommend a spot to camp the night before we set out on the pass?

There looked like some good bush camping spots at the base of the pass. Can one camp there? Does one have to arrange anything with the locals?

I think someone on the forum did it this year.

From my recollection, they were the first one in many months to drive it (according to the guard at the gate), and the route was severely overgrown, as well as requiring a lot of road building.

    Good Morning,

I am also trying to find this information, i would like to drive the pass and stay over for 2 nights while doing so, or camping in other parts of the reserve, is there a contact number for any one we can maybe get in contact with?

Have not driven the pass recently so cant comment on the state of the roads, however as some months have passed since the heavy rains it is likely that the road will have been used by someone, try checking with the reserve staff.

I dont know of any camping outside on the West, and its a long way from the pass to to Mafefe - there are villages around & you wont get too far off the road so unlikely that a stay will go unnoticed. If thats what you decide to do Id recommend asking headman for permission.

They have recently completed a campsite in the park, its near the main gate on the Eastern side - I dont have the reserve number, but you may be able to get a direct contact from LEDET [email protected]

    Enjoy your visit !

I will be driving it on the 6th of Aug, don't know about east and west, but will drive up the pass and then through the reserve.

Drove it in middle June, no problems

We drove up the pass in August and there were no issues.

There's also a new campsite at the main gate to the park.
