Default BFG k2 vs Cooper ST Maxx vs Maxxi Razr at811

    Good day everyone

For an FJ cruiser, stock tyre size (I think it's 275/70/17) - which tyre is the way to go?
    • BFG k2?
    • Cooper ST Maxx?
    • Maxxi Razr at811?

It's an FJ, which gets used for 4x4ing, overlanding and well - the off roady stuff...

Any input or preferences - and why?

    Cheers

As we were standing at a mates house, with a few GS's and my Africa Twin, discussing motorbikes as one does, his wife asked: "What is an African Twin?"

My dearest girlfriend replied, "It's like a GS... Just better"

I have no experience on any of those. I have Cooper Discovers on at the moment and I am not a fan as it does not have good grip in the wet. A friend had BFG's he loves them, they lasted a long while. I want to replace with maxxis, but its out of my budget currently.
    Have a look.

I had the ST Maxx on my FJ. I still don't understand the purpose of those tyres. Their grip isn't better than any other AT tyre with less aggressive tread pattern. Tried and tested on sandy uphills. They become noisy over time pretty much like MT tyres. They cause higher fuel consumption, same as MT tyres. Their speed rating is low, "Q". Same as most MT tyres. All the disadvantages of an MT tyre combined with the disadvantages of an average AT tyre.
Their sidewall is very stiff. I have often driven them deflated to 1.7 bar. Eventually 2 tyres developed cracks running from the tread across the shoulder towards the hub.
I went for a Chinese tyre, Roadcruza, afterwards. Tread looks like the BFG AT, got better grip than the Cooper in any situation, less noisy and much more comfortable ride. It got a higher speed rating, is LT spec and the same load rating as the ST Maxx. 2 ply sidewall instead of 3 ply, but so far, repeated trips into Damara Land and various gravel road trips haven't left a mark on any of the tyres, neither on the sidewall nor on the tread.
For my application, a 3ply sidewall is overrated in my opinion.

If you compare the ST Maxx to other AT and MT tyres, you will see they got massive tread blocks, even larger than many MT tyres. But the gaps in between the tread blocks are smaller than on any MT tyre, almost as narrow as your average AT tyre. And that's why they are no better than any average AT tyre.
They might look the part, but that's all what they are about. And for that, they are too expensive.

Oh, and the FJ's standard tyre size is 265/70R17

I have the maxxis bravo's at980's on my hilux, yes not the razr's, but I am properly impressed with them. And they as basically the lower version of the at811, so the at811 should be brilliant.

I originally wanted the razr's but due to no stock on my size I went with the bravo's. Almost 10000km's now and still look perfect. Very good grip on gravel and dirt tracks, done some mild sand driving with no issues. That being said I will definitely go for the razr's next time around.

Daai Coopers op my Patrol sing soos Roberta Flack met 'n ###### verkoue. Kan nie WAG dat die goed glad word nie maar lyk my hulle hou ook vir ewig.
DAMN good tyres otherwise, must say. Strong and VERY good in mud/rocks

    Sterkte

Iíve had both the Coopers and BFGs. I prefer the BFG, but I canít give you a factual reason why, they just feel better.

Have never tried the Maxxis as there seem to be a lot more stock issues with them, so never bothered.

My next set of tyres will be the KO2ís again.

I would go for the Maxxis!

It will also be a looker.

I have the radar renegade rt+ on my fj.

Maybe im biased, but i had no issues with my MAXXI's.
1st i had the bighorns on and now running the RAZR LT muds on my Hilux.
Less road noise than the previous bighorns, great grip in gravel and mud.
    3 ply sidewall.
Pricing is similar but in my humble opinion, the MAXXI's is just awesome.
    Good looking tyre as well

vs BFG all is here, I hear the Maxxis Razr are now expensive than BFG, trade off of harder compound na s ride, poor in the wet and mud are the real downers of BFG.

I will definitely look at the Maxiss Razr as well (not sure about the price difference between the 2 now).
