Question Upgrading from Duster, but to what?

    Evening all!

I’ve been driving (and LOVING) my 2015 Duster 4x4 dci for about 5 years now. Recently started getting the itch to upgrade to something more comfortable, and much more capable off road. We’ve been hiking quite a lot (some tricky roads to get to camps) and offroad quite a bit at places like Hennops, but the car will also be my daily runner in and around Sandton.

My budget is around R400k max, ideally closer to R350k.

I’m looking (so far) at the Ranger Wildtrack or XLT, Disco, or Pajero. Also considered the Everest, Isuzu Dmax and Fortuner, but not 100% sold on those.

No kids, so space isn’t a factor! Only things I’m definitely wanting are: Has to be 4x4, has to be automatic, has to have low range+diff lock for the hairier bits, and a fancy touch screen console would be a bonus (I’m a bit of a tech junky). Long term maintenance should also be fairly low (reliable, availability of parts, etc).

Any suggestions on what to look for in this range, and also what kind of mileage is acceptable for a decent price?

    Appreciated in advance!

    Morning
I'm reluctantly selling my Ford Ranger which has all the camping extras you can imagine.
    I would accept R375,000.
    It's advertised on Gumtree.

Give me a call if you are interested.

If I was in your shoes these are the options I would look at
    Suzuki Jimny (new model)
    Mitsubishi Pajero SWB gen 4
Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (cause of tech) if can get a new enough one with all the tech
    Nissan navara (shape with Mercedes)
    Mitsubishi triton
    Ford everest

I am not sure nissan does the pathfinder anymore but it was a great vehicle in the older models

The Pathfinders were fantastic! Jimmy I just find a bit too small for my liking, though I know they are bulletproof. Pajero SWB my only issue is its hard to find one now that is still in good nick. Paj Sport I'm definitely leaning toward, as well as the Triton. Everest I'm also liking, but is it as capable off road as say a Ranger?

The fortunate thing about the pajero is they good for many many kms. The gen 4 also does not have the scary fuel pump worry like gen 3, could even look at a lwb for more space too.
The everest is same is ranger really, just in suv format

Thinking about it some more. Maybe an outside option. 2013+ Jeep Grand Cherokee 3,6L Petrol limited with the 17" wheels.

Good offroad - low range and difflocks
    Very nice daily driver
    Has all the gadgets
    Big upgrade in comfort

Fuel is not too terrible, around 13L/100km

service and parts, well, maybe not so very easy, but you can import anything you need off RockAuto and service at Bulli.
2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD Overland - GDE Eco Tune + 2" Lift on 265/70/17 BFG KO2's
2017 Venter Savuti + Tentco Jnr, Dometic CF50 Fridge + Ecoflow River Pro and 120W solar panel.

Any reason you'd recommend it over the 3.0 V6?

Lots. If you want to buy a 3.0L V6 turbo diesel then buy a low mileage WK with FSH.

    My choices would be.

    Pajero sport
    Fortuner
Any extende cab bakkie. This gives you more space in the back but then if you start a family very soon you might have to go back to the others.

Why would you buy ANY vehicle that isn't in good nick? If you buy a lifted trail rig that the PO bashed over weekends, that is your own bad decision. That would go for any capable 4x4.

Ride comfort is as good as any vehicle I have owned. Lovely German auto box, heated seats, good seating position, center cubby box perfectly placed, good space for feet and legs, should be good even if you're over 1.9m.

Maintenance: factory service contract is part of the purchase, thereafter serviced at an indie as per the schedule. Major service costs in line with most current modern vehicles. Nothing major has broken on ours, nothing fell off. Crank position sensor harness needed TLC at 250,000kms. Cat converters were removed @ 225k KM, which improved fuel consumption by minimum 1L/100. We do a minimum of 5kms of bad servitude farm road every day. So that implies at least 16,000kms of that mileage was on a really horrendous dirt road. Yearly trips are usually Moz or similar and that would mean at least another 20,000km of hard off-roading. We might need to do some suspension bushes @ 300,000. The rear door hinges have started to rattle on bad corrugations. Spares are just an Interweb click away. Hundreds of upgrade options.

    Factory sound system is excellent.
Fuel consumption now without cats in mixed driving is 12L/100 measured using a GPS trip log. So genuine figures, NOT onboard computer lies.
This drops to 10.5L/100 on the open road when driven at the speed limit.

Well, I don't mean willingly. I mean people buying one, only for it to start falling apart a few miles down the road, and experiencing major issues with high mileage. Like a Landy, I figure its luck of the draw when buying used: you either get a great one that lasts forever, or you marry one that keeps falling apart.

But the rest sounds good though. I'll definitely give it a look! Rubicon also worth a look?

As with most vehicles: FSH and a good look-over by a reputable indie.

As a lifestyle vehicle the JK Wranglers are awesome.

The Sahara only have traction control, so if a diff lock is a sine qua non then you will have to look at a Rubicon.

Long term maintenance fairly low then rules out the Discovery or a Ford.

Isuzu, Mitsubishi and Toyota are good choices. Also can't go wrong with an Amarok. Just not sure what year model and km reading your budget will allow.

    Good luck.
