How about a FJ Cruiser?![]()
|
Evening all!
I’ve been driving (and LOVING) my 2015 Duster 4x4 dci for about 5 years now. Recently started getting the itch to upgrade to something more comfortable, and much more capable off road. We’ve been hiking quite a lot (some tricky roads to get to camps) and offroad quite a bit at places like Hennops, but the car will also be my daily runner in and around Sandton.
My budget is around R400k max, ideally closer to R350k.
I’m looking (so far) at the Ranger Wildtrack or XLT, Disco, or Pajero. Also considered the Everest, Isuzu Dmax and Fortuner, but not 100% sold on those.
No kids, so space isn’t a factor! Only things I’m definitely wanting are: Has to be 4x4, has to be automatic, has to have low range+diff lock for the hairier bits, and a fancy touch screen console would be a bonus (I’m a bit of a tech junky). Long term maintenance should also be fairly low (reliable, availability of parts, etc).
Any suggestions on what to look for in this range, and also what kind of mileage is acceptable for a decent price?
Appreciated in advance!

2007 Volvo S60
2012 FJ Cruiser
1983 FJ60 Landcruiser -sold-
Discovery 4 v8
Freelander 2 SD4
Isuzu Dmax 300 4x4 SC
Discovery 3 HSE V8
Defender 2.8i sold
Audi SQ5 Tdi sold 😢
Range Rover 4.4 V8 sold
If I was in your shoes these are the options I would look at
Suzuki Jimny (new model)
Mitsubishi Pajero SWB gen 4
Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (cause of tech) if can get a new enough one with all the tech
Nissan navara (shape with Mercedes)
Mitsubishi triton
Ford everest
I am not sure nissan does the pathfinder anymore but it was a great vehicle in the older models
Current: Pajero 3500 V6 24v LWB M/T Gen 2.5
Previous: Pajero 3.2 Did LWB A/T
Previous: Colt 2.8tdi D/C 4x4 Extreme
One Heart: Land Rover Defender Puma 110, 2 x TD5 110

My choices would be.
Pajero sport
Fortuner
Any extende cab bakkie. This gives you more space in the back but then if you start a family very soon you might have to go back to the others.
Wrangler JK Unlimited 3.6.
A new shape Jimny sounds like what you might want to look at. Not the most tech-laden car, but has enough to make it comfortable and definitely capable off road. Running costs will be on the low end. Reliability won't be an issue either. Haven't heard of any issues

"Sometimes when I close my eyes, I am blind"
read this again carefully:
"I’ve been driving (and LOVING) my 2015 Duster 4x4 dci for about 3 years now. Recently started getting the itch to upgrade to something more comfortable"...."has to be automatic"
Are you stating that an auto Jimny is more comfortable and has more power than a Duster?
Volvo XC60?
Isuzu KB300 2012 Auto - King
Hyundai Grand10 2018 1.2 Auto - Queen
Suzuki Ertiga 2024 1.5 Auto - Jack of All trades
TBH - a newer Duster would be my choice. Or the same Duster.
What exactly is in not fulfilling? I can't believe that any hiking trail road will be so bad a 4x4 duster can't make it.
You ask for low range. Why? If you can find a late model Freelander that might be a very nice "upgrade" and still keep the good fuel consumption and daily driver comfort.

I am going to go left field and suggest the Pajero Sport.
