What did you expect? Add one more tick box to your list...re-sale value. It might change some of your options or considerations.

In terms of purchase? 400k limit. In terms of fuel consumption? I know I'll never match the Duster when going for something bigger, so ideally I don't want to push more than say 14l/100km realistically.
You will do much better (lower) than 14l/100km. And as previously mentioned...the gear ratio in autobox of the FJ is much better geared for better consumption than the LC v6 bakkies or Hiluc V6's.

    Morning
I'm reluctantly selling my Ford Ranger which has all the camping extras you can imagine.
    I would accept R375,000.
    It's advertised on Gumtree.

If I only knew before what I know now... I would have been driving an FJ a long long time ago

Broadly speaking there are three vehicles which are frequently punted by their owners on this forum, but they are generally judged as overly biased.

Those three are the FJ, Pajero Gen 3 and Amarok.

If people are a bit more open minded and willing to wonder why these owners are so adamant in their quest, I think more people will echo what you are saying.

Unfortunately it is seen as being a fanboy.

Some advice, buy yours before you start punting it and drive the price up even more

The FJ has a party piece that you would probably not have experienced on a test drive as you need "safe facilities" to do it, and that is the way it goes from 120 - 180 when you floor it, it does not feel like what a car normally accelerate like.

I have a friend that bought the fj, he loved it so much. His wife used it daily in town and they did not enjoy fuel consumption but they did go from a diesel double cab.
He did not like how cheap the plastics and toy like / unrefined finishes were even compared to his double cab but the rest he loved.

The problem op will have with any v6 is that the fuel consumption is not something to look at. You buy a v6 for the power and sound of motor etc and if you get what 1 can call decent fuel consumption then you are happy.

Going from the duster the power will be amazing, the capability amazing too.

In my opinion, you only buy a car and worry of resale if you actually 1, cannot afford the car so need decent selling prices 2, replace car regularly so need to hold value well 3, you don't buy with your heart but your wallet.
I personally never buy a car with the thought of how much can I get for it when I sell it, I don't buy the car with the thought of selling in the first place, why even buy the car then if before you even take ownership you already thinking of selling it?

You might push past that 14l/100km ever so slightly when you try that often enough.
But overtaking a long truck or three is a piece of cake.

Very true what you say. But I pointed out the resale value to SJN in case he is unsure of the fuel consumption. With the FJ "giving it a try" for a few months is less of a risk than with some other vehicles since the FJ could be sold without a loss a few months down the line in case petrol turns out to be too much.

It is the same for me, resale value doesn't come into play much except if you buy new every couple of years.
I am referring more to me buying mine in January and then the price for same model with same mileage is R100 000 more in June.
I don't see myself selling my FJ at all , so resale value for me does not mean much.

It was not meant as a thing to anyone, but I personally just feel the reason everyone bats for Toyota or some cars is resale. If that is the only reason a person can tell me to buy that car, it is the only reason I won't. (Me personally)
In what you say is some what true, but there is always the buyers price and the sellers price plus there are fees and such that get added to any sale which could all count as a loss over a few months no matter how good resale is.
I do believe the fj is awesome as I said. I think he should be able to get an fj from a pretty decent dealer for a few days and he can then see the fuel consumption and daily drive in it.
As we are all aware, fuel prices and interest rates are set to go sky high here soon, and if he is worried about daily drive he should be very careful of anything bigger than the 2,5 diesel motor as the fuel consumption will hurt. (My opinion)
I personally went from a Getz to a v6 pajero but knew fuel consumption was something to not look at and I can promise, thank goodness I bought without a thought towards fuel consumption. I drive fairly light footed and get about 1000km from about 140 litres of fuel. This is pretty decent for a 2,5 ton car and family packed in with a v6 motor.
Since we changed the Getz to this we now either use mrs car or else plan carefully as fuel costs climb very quick with a pop to the shop here and there or even that 400 to 500km round trip for holiday. Sambo ballade gets my 500km on about R500 vs the pajero which is 500km on at least R1000. From the duster it wouod be an even worse comparison as the duster is super light on fuel and would even make swambo ballade look thirsty.
I just worry for op in that regard.

That is impressive but is also a rare case as our country is falling apart

I have become desentisised by any fuel consumption at or below 15l/100km. My mother's LC 105 (4.5 EFI) manages a startling 25L/100km. Off road extras don't help, but jaslikit... As someone already mentioned, the driving experience outweighs fuel consumption as long as: 1. The vehicle is reliable 2. You can afford the fuel. My mom has had the 105 for 13 years and she just spent a small fortune on servicing and replacing every consumable possible. She will never sell it - she reckons that it's her last car. She lived and travelled through Namibia for 12 of those 13 years and the LC only left her on the side of the road twice. One time because the positive lead to the battery had come loose on some bad gravel (quick fix) and once because the cambelt snapped (her fault for not replacing it when she should have). Reliability and driving experience far outweigh fuel consumption, if you can afford it.

Being pedantic. A 4.5 efi does not have a cambelt

Thanks, I used 'appreciating asset' a bit flippantly but was just referring to the fact that I made R50k in three years when I sold recently, our cpi/inflation/rand value negates this in real terms and there are other reasons for the holding value........by all accounts I should get what I paid for the new one, having just driven it off the showroom floor.......
