I think he is asking if the money you would get now for it would be able to buy you a vehicle in the same class. e.g I sold my last car for the same money I bought it for 2 years ago, but I would not be able to buy the same car for that money today. They are more expensive in 2021

If the appreciation of your vehicle is less than the true inflation, you would still get more money if you sold it now than what you would have been able to sell it for a year ago, or 2 years ago.
However, due to inflation the money you receive today would buy you less (e.g. house, food, new vehicle) than what you would have been able to buy, would you have sold the vehicle last year or the year before for the then applicable market price.

That's what I was wondering about. If you really gain value on your vehicle or "just" get more Rands, which is still not bad.

I’ve been driving (and LOVING) my 2015 Duster 4x4 dci for about 5 years now. Recently started getting the itch to upgrade to something more comfortable, and much more capable off road. We’ve been hiking quite a lot (some tricky roads to get to camps) and offroad quite a bit at places like Hennops, but the car will also be my daily runner in and around Sandton.

My budget is around R400k max, ideally closer to R350k.

I’m looking (so far) at the Ranger Wildtrack or XLT, Disco, or Pajero. Also considered the Everest, Isuzu Dmax and Fortuner, but not 100% sold on those.

No kids, so space isn’t a factor! Only things I’m definitely wanting are: Has to be 4x4, has to be automatic, has to have low range+diff lock for the hairier bits, and a fancy touch screen console would be a bonus (I’m a bit of a tech junky). Long term maintenance should also be fairly low (reliable, availability of parts, etc).

Any suggestions on what to look for in this range, and also what kind of mileage is acceptable for a decent price?

    Appreciated in advance!
Hilux/Fortuner/Pajero...?? Even Hilux Xtra Cab?? If you do lots of city driving daily, maybe Amarok Auto?

Drove the Ranger and Disco Sport this morning. So, so far I've driven: FJ Cruiser, Fiat Fullback, Grand Cherokee, Prado, Ranger, Pajero Sport, Wrangler, and the Fortuner. Front runners so far are the Pajero Sport, FJ Cruiser and (sorry okes) Ranger!

Prado V6 is also ALWAYS a great great Buy I think, if that will work for you. VERY nice "allrounder" SUV.

People also only talk good of the Pajero Sport......??

How much engine braking is available in the automatic Jimny?

My neighbour went for a test drive in one and settled for a manual. He says it is a nice two seater toy, not a daily drive but an ideal third car.

My 2 cents worth...At this stage of your buying journey, the decision will come down to which vehicle makes you "feel' good while driving it, and after you've parked it.

@HugoNotte, you'll be glad to hear that I've been a bit obsessed with the FJ since my test drive. Only thing that is keeping me from jumping in head first is that fuel consumption

The petrol consumption that salesman told you about, is achievable, but you would have to drive like a boy racer all the time. He might also think that the FJ got the same 4.0 V6 as the V6 Hilux, Fortuner and 70 series Cruiser, which all are heavier on petrol than the FJ is. Unlike those other Toyotas, the FJ got the dual VVT-i 1GR-FE, which is more fuel efficient.
If you don't modify the FJ and use less aggressive AT tyres you should do way better than that. 7-8 km/l is easily achievable.
Agteros, another FJ owner and forum member gets much better consumption, nobody knows how he does it, but it's possible.

Where is your cut off, what would you be willing to afford?

A couple of threads with information about the FJ Cruiser (incl. real world fuel consumption)

PM Agteros and Hedgehog to get their input on fuel consumption.

The good thing is, if you buy a 2nd hand FJ Cruiser now and you feel it's not the right choice a few month down the line, you should be able to sell it for the same money you bought it for, if not for a profit. Try that with an Everest...

What about a SD4 Evoque? You can get a 2015 with under 100k km in the price range you're looking at.

Nothing against the Evoque. But it's definitely not a proper 4x4. OP wants a locking diff and proper low range/4x4.

That sounds MUCH more doable! I've got quite a heavy foot on the highway, but I've got the Discovery Insure device, so have to behave myself anyway

In terms of purchase? 400k limit. In terms of fuel consumption? I know I'll never match the Duster when going for something bigger, so ideally I don't want to push more than say 14l/100km realistically.
