Default Upgrading from Duster, but to what?

The Trailhawk does not have air suspension but it does have more clearance than a standard Cherokee (220mm)It also comes standard with under body protection plates. There are some lift kits that you can import that is not too expensive, I have watched some videos where they have fitted a 2inch lift , decent offroad tyres and rock sliders. You will not believe how capable these vehicles are!

This is my 3rd Jeep, all with Pentastar engines, I had the Wrangler 3.6, a Cherokee LTD 3.2 and now the Trailhawk. No issues to report thus far.

There is no other vehicle on the market in this size crossover with low range, diff-lock and traction control. The only one that comes close would be the Freelander/ Disco Sport, but not the same 4x4 goodies though.

220mm + skidplates is plenty for most trails

I forgot to mention, the bumper design is also different from the standard Cherokee to improve the angles.

Here's a good video showing what the 4x4 system on the Cherokee can do, not that I would do this to mine but it sure is capable enough if one doesn't mind taking the risk on potential body damage.

Going to book the FJ Cruiser, Ranger, JKUR and Fortuner as well.

He goes through some really rough stuff there, but he put a Fox 2.0 long travel suspension on with 3" lift to do it, and then he "wish he had the HEMI engine"

Granted but it does show how good the 4x4 system works....... and any Yank would always wish he had the HEMI engine! To be honest if I could afford the fuel bill so would I.

True, bust most 4WDs would need those sort of upgrades to make it up some of those trails. Not the best driver though, definitely prefers a pedal to the metal approach 100% of the times instead of giving that poor car a chance to figure things out electronically for the price, definitely one of the best on-road / Offroad packages out there.

Agreed, he went through some rough stuff, and you could see some sort of TC system working when he was teetering on a crossover.

When you watch the Cliffhanger 2.0 video, on the last section he tries to gun it first, and ends up getting nowhere on two attempts, he then engages the selec speed on his third attempt and the Jeep drives up the obstacle no problem!

I paid about R500k and the new list price at the time was almost R800k.

So it has a terrible resale value , dont get new one , much like my Alfa , my 2001 Cherokee was fantastic but it was terrible on fuel , I had a 2 inch lift and the fuel was like 12l/100km best (driving at 100km/hr to Zim) to around 25 in traffic , had to go , big 4l lump, so what is this 3.6 like? the old Cherokee was good as it was light so is this latest also quite light for a 4x4?

I can get it down to 11l/100km if I drive it really nicely, average between 12 and 13.
BUT like I mentioned none of my diesel d/c or SUV's did any better. Those were 120-140kw motors the Jeep is 200kw! If you want cheap fuel consumption buy a diesel Duster.

The Cherokee is a compact 4x4 with Prado kit. You can not expect 2.0 Turbo diesel economy. From what I understand Jimny's are not great on fuel for their size either. Hauling around a proper 4x4 system drinks fuel.

When it says 4x4 low range on the tin, do not expect an average consumption of above 9.5km/l.

True, Subaru Forester would come close too. I would worry about resale value going forward, if it's a factor.

If you want good resale value, buy a Toyota, but then live with the increased risk of theft or being hi-jacked.

I prefer having my car in the parking spot where I left it. Otherwise it creates a hell of a lot of admin I don't want.

If you buy 2nd hand, the losses would be less.
With certain Toyota models the person buying new scores, due to the high resale value and the 2nd hand buyer has to pay a relatively high price.
Speculating on resale value when buying new isn't all that easy, many factors are involved.

I cannot say I came out better selling any of the 4 Toyota's second hand than any of the other brands I have owned before or since.
